Everyone knows the real masterpiece is Sonic 2. That holds up perfectly well today and belong's on the top 10 of the greatest games of all time.

It's done in a sort of assholish manner. You'll even have portions built specifically to go fast, but then some midway point you'll have an alternate path you can only take if you were going walking speed. Commonly leading to power ups or even ring zones. Then there's the chance any given fast portion is secretly a death trap, or stops functioning over or under a specific speed usually both that turns it in to a death trap.

In which the best way to play the game is purely by memory or playing it very slowly.

Guys, just because a game was groundbreaking doesn't mean it isn't flawed. Sonic 1 has nothing on Sonic 2 and 3. Now, this doesn't mean Sonic 1 is a bad game, but at least acknowledge that it really does have questionable level design.

Sonic may be shit to you, but what made the series so good is it's gameplay. It's pinball physics and quaint level design for a platformer. The idea of speed being a "reward"; Learning the game is learning to play. Understanding level design, physics and placement is what makes Sonic so fun. Fiddling around.
