I could understand a 7 if it was a full retail game, but for a $20 downloadable title it's fun and very well made. Its kinda hard to compare it to full retail games but it's very likely the best platformer of the year, and worthy to be up for consideration for GOTY

Sonic Mania was never going to get an honest review score because Genesis era Sonic has such a massive legacy and recent Sonic games have been so divisive that ANY return to form would have been highly praised.

Personally, I'm more cynical and view it as yet another nostalgia fueled cash grab by a major corporation that is more content with revisiting well-trodden ground in terms of level design than trying something new.

Because just like the older Sonic games I just don't think the gameplay is as good as everybody says. Drop Dash helps alleviate some of my problems with the constant stunted movement if you don't know the level well enough, but overall it's just banal boring platforming and the FEELING of going fast rather than actually accomplishing anything. Everybody loves Hydrocity Act 2 but all I can think when I play is that I'm literally holding right for 95% of the level watching Sonic go through loops and going fast. Is it exciting? Yeah. Is it fun? No. All of the actual platforming is really barebones and not all that interesting, or based around really shit mechanics like bumpers/those minigame electicity balls from Sonic 3 in the last level of Mania. I understand how they work, that doesn't make them fun.

Also doesn't help that they decided to bring Blue Spheres back, the most boring minigame of all time, and didn't give you any tangible benefits ingame for doing them besides unlockables. If they gave you rings or a shield for your troubles to continue your run I'd be satisfied, but as it is they should have just put it in as a side game where you can select the Blue Sphere level you want and give you more chances to perfect them for unlockables. After you get all the medals there is literally no point in ever doing Blue Spheres again.

7 is a little too harsh. I'd give it an 8; it could have been better if the devs realized that you don't have to copy the outdated elements when you want your game to feel like classic Sonic. The game drags on towards the end.
