A large scale online game like the old Star Wars Battlefront. Play as one of the major factions all with different strengths (Green Martians are strong and carry more weapons, Red Martians have better technology, etc). Add in hero characters like John or Tars Tarkas.

>>
>>389255820

Yeah, I can see Stormlight being pretty cool. That being said, aside from the magic system and combat, the books are pretty terrible.

Awful pacing, generic characters, horrible dialog. Sanderson gets way too many dickriders for how bad of an author he is.

But he churns out books at a rapid pace, so I guess that's cool?

>Legend, by David Gemmel.
It actually got a game way the hell back in the day but it needs an update. Not-Rome is being invaded by Not-Attila and only one ultimate choke-point can hold him off. A small force of conscripted farmers, psychic genius warrior-monks, Robin Hood's merry men and DRUSS THE FOOKIN' LEGEND are all that stands between Not-Atilla and global conquest. Would make for a great Mount & Blade mod or stand alone siege-management game.
>>389256286
His series is 2000 pages of his boring as fuck student life (he spent something like 8 years as an undergraduate before graduating in ENGLISH) combined with disgusting wish-fulfillment which would turn off CWC (motherfucking sex-ninjas and sex-goddesses falling at MC's feet.

>Earth Abides, by George Rippey Stewart (or something odd like that)
Post apocalyptic society rebuilding story that isn't a retarded edge-fest or ham-fisted political allegory. Just normalfaggots trying to put the world back together after a super-plague kills most people. No bondage-bandits or political utopias in sight. Could work in lots of different ways, I just like post-apocalyptic stuff and wish the stories weren't all so irrationally misanthropic.

>Tales of the Dying Earth, by Jack Vance
Considering that this series is almost the single biggest contributor to the construction of D&D a game ought to be simple enough. Either an open-world RPG full of crazy shit or maybe a story driven adventure with a beginning, middle and end in the vein of 'Cugel the Clever'.

>Commentaries on the Gallic War, by Julius Caesar

There's two that are fairly infamous and get posted in these threads a lot.

I made it through 2 and a half Malazan books.

The first one was okay. I know it's considered the weakest.

The second one has a lot of pacing issues, but ends super well.

I got maybe halfway through the third one and just lost interest. I'm not a fan of books where 90% of the book is dull, with the last 10% being amazing. It makes it such a struggle to read it.

I get that its amazing, but it's not for me. Then with every book switching up the characters, it's hard to get attached to literally anybody.

>In high-school Pat was something of a class clown. His hobbies included reading a novel or two a day and giving relationship advice to all his friends despite the fact that he had never so much as kissed a girl. He also role-played and wrote terrible stories about elves. He was pretty much a geek.

>For the next seven years Pat studied anthropology, philosophy, eastern religions, history, alchemy, parapsychology, literature, and writing. He studied six different martial arts, practiced improv comedy, learned how to pick locks, and became a skilled lover of women. He also began writing a satirical advice column which he continues to this day: The College Survivial Guide. Through all of this he continued to work on his novel.

>Now Pat teaches half-time at his old school as an assistant-sub-lecturer. He is underpaid but generally left alone to do as he sees fit with his classes. He is advisor for the college feminists, the fencing club, and, oddly enough, a sorority. He still roll-plays occasionally, but now he does it in an extremely sophisticated, debonair way.

IIRC the book straight-up starts off with the protagonist going "haha there's a guy over there with his entrails hanging out xD he's dead now" and then staring down a zombie and the zombie fleeing because "the darkness in my eyes is like totally too much, man"
Thankfully he mellowed out by the end

It's actually worse than sex-loving. Their culture legit doesn't understand the biology behind pregnancy at all and aren't aware of how impregnation works. sex was a completely normal thing in their society, just something you did with another person. I think after some sparring with his hot teacher he had a boner like it was a fucking hentai and his teacher basically took him to the bushes to fuck him so they could continue training. and yeah he also had the most beautiful girl there lust after his dick and he also fucked her in addition to his teacher. I don't know how rothfuss managed to restrain himself from having the 3 have a threesome.

Shit writers do piss me off like nothing else in the world though. Can't plebs just be happy watching superhero tv shows or something? Why do they have to taint literature with their lack of taste? it was after the sex goddess encounter, because he tried his sex god skills on her and she wasnt entirely impressed. the sex warrior village was basically the last thing to happen in the books, there was essentially an epilogue after where he returned to the college, impressed everyone with his sex skills and impressed his teacher with his magic cloak, and he had a good time out with his friends and then the book ended.
>>
>>389259839

the second series is so much more different in tone, it's a ton more light hearted but there is still some dark stuff since it's the same universe, but I felt it was less overbearing that Jorg's trilogy. Lots. I kind of hated the fact the Jorg basically always wins no matter what, at least in the second trilogy the protag is a useless young ezio type character and he's always finding smart ways to get out of work and life and death situations. second book in that trilogy was the best imo, third one basically tells you what happens to the world and how it got that way.

If Rothfuss pulls this I will unironically drop all of my life plans to travel to American and kill him by stuffing his books down his throat page by page until nothing is left and then kill myself because a world where Rothfuss can sell even a single copy of his work isn't really worth living in. If Kvothe is just telling a story that would unironically make it worse than if it were true. This guy is supposed to be a level 999 bard since he was 8 years old, how can he be this fucking poor a storyteller? I don't think that Rothfuss has ever appreciated good fiction in his life. Hell, after reading his work you could be forgiven for thinking he's never even spoken to a human being before.

>>389260049
Urth is an awesome setting but Severian's story would be beyond impossible to ever adapt faithfully. It's too literary to ever work as anything but writing, you could get the tone across maybe if you were willing to rip the story's guts out and hand the general concept over to some visionary like John Boorman but the world doesn't like giving us nice things so that will never happen. Just some shit about the Ascian War or general adventuring in the Commonwealth could be cool.

all that shit is happening while he is telling the story, I don't think anything of note happens in present day at the end of the book. his demon assistant or whatever (actual spoilers if anyone cares) hires thugs to try to incite kvothe to go back to the old days before 9/11, but kvothe restrains himself and takes the beating like a cuck, I can't remember if this happens in the very end or just towards it. I know it happens after we learn that he trained with the warriors because it's supposed to set up drama where you expect him to lay the beat down but in the end he doesn't

there's actual fantasy elements outside of westeros though, westeros is the cliche historical fiction while everywhere outside it has actual magic/glamor. dragons, the lord of light, those blue lipped wizards, all came from outside of westeros. of course it's not just wizards and magic everywhere in essos, but westeros in comparison is very straight forward, except for maybe valyrian steel but that is basically just a lost technology to westerosi and not actual magic.

Publishers just hire random people to do cheap covers for them. Usually the artist doesn't know anything about the book he's doing the cover for. This is especially common for sci-fi covers where it's just some random ship. Also one of the worse examples of irrelevant covers is The Lost Fleet, a book series about an admiral of a space fleet. Some versions of those books use generic marine on planet on the cover, despite the MC never even wearing a space suit or participating in the combat.

I hate how retards were using this as an excuse for roland being black in the movie, that's not how it fucking worked. it's just your standard time loop back to the same point in the desert except one small thing is different each time, or at the very least it is possible for a detail to be different eventually, which taken to its conclusion of infinite possibilities maybe, eventually, he will complete his quest for real. people try to paint the series' ending as if it were multiverses with infinite rolands on the quest, and the one in the movies is just one version of roland. fucking misinterpreting idiots.

Except it's written in a terrible way for Unreliable Narrator.
Unreliable Narrator is at its best when small details in the prose give away what's being narrated is wrong. For example, saying he's so good that he wins all the competitions, then later throwing an off hand reference to one somebody else won. That sort of thing.
Saying "I'm the best. Lol, JK" and then throwing arbitrary roadblocks in his path is the absolute worst form of it, because it relies on Meta knowledge to see it coming.
And so is "I awed a crowd with only one string unbroken on my instrument" and then saying "aktually I awed a crowd with an unbroken instrument" because it's just slowing the pace of the author masturbating in your face, not stopping it.

It's the same exact cycle repeated like 5 times throughout the books, I'm so fucking sick of it

Gary Stue is a perfect protagonist, has nothing to do with having to save the world

thats true. a more apt one would be kyon kun suddenly being black on the 20000th loop of endless 8. theres no perfect analogy because the time loop is roland's entire life, not a short term one like ground hog day or haruhi. but it definitely isn't a multiverse because the dark tower was the center of all creation including all multiverses, there is only one roland. he lived in the keystone All-World that was twins with the keystone Earth that Stephen King lived in.

There is are two lesser-known Zelazny novels that would make good games:

1) Jack of Shadows : non--rotating world with the night side ruled by magic, and the day side ruled by science. Night siders are reborn in the Dung Pits of Glyve when the die.

they also did not a have much of a civilization. they were just an entire people of mercenaries.

that's all I remember.

Lmao, you realize that's almost the end of the second book, right? You read nearly 1,500 pages of Rothfuss and now you're trying to make a statement like "Pshh, yeah, it's garbage. I got bored and dropped that shit." Rothfuss already has your money. And before you reply with "I pirated it," Rothfuss also has your time. A good deal of it. You are fucking hilarious anon.

I kept reading because the first book was pretty good and I was interested in the Chandrian/Amyr stuff. The pacing in the second is abysmal and it doubles down on Mary Sue shit and Denna. Denna made me want to claw my eyes out, and Kvothe is a huge cuck just like Rothfuss. The series had potential but the second book has killed any interest I had after the first.
>>

I think Wheel of Time would make a fine Total War game. But since WoT doesnt have the fraction of the fame that Warhammer has, I dont think we'll ever see that.

>I don't remember wanting to punch a fictional character so hard.

I do. It was this one urban fantasy private eye who never ever did anything bad to female characters because reasons, always let them go under some pretense or excuse and by God I wanted to murder him so badly.

I honestly can't believe that Glen Cook could write something like this.
>>
>>389251656
Kvothe was born with a special power. He was smarter and prettier than all his classmates at the wizard academy, even though he is only 15. He grew up with the legendary gypsies, so he became the best at singing, playing and acting. He is also the best thief ever because he became homeless after his family was killed by Akatsuki. He is also the best at magic and he can control the wind when he gets pissed off. When he grew up he was trained by the best fighters in the world and he also trained in sex magic with the hottest goddess ever. Also he is super handsome, his eyes change collor when he's angry and all the girls like him

Likes: Denna, music, singing, buying new clothes, drinking water
Disliskes: Other women that arent Denna, not seeying Denna, guys who fuck Denna, when other people interrupt him while he's talking about Denna, when other people take his guitar away from him (its ok if its Denna)
>>
>>389270875

Also, Olem best character.

Again, he's explaining why he didn't care for the book. And when someone pointed out he was "lying," he said "you're right, I actually got this far" in a very normal manner rather than "LMAO NO! Kvothe is such a little faggot, and the only people that dislike him are entirely void of any redeeming qualities and pure evil meanyheads who hate him because he's so special and unique and smart and his love interest is a boring as fuck plain Jane that has no personality beyond being a really shitty attempt at mysterious.

Writing a fantasy book at the moment and I'm a bit unsure on the structure.
Would it be better to have:

1: Starts off with the character as a kid, shows their journey up until a certain point, and then does a 10 year timeskip about half way through with the rest of the story taking place with them as an adult.

2: Starts with them as an adult, and then reveals the stuff they did as a kid through the occasional flashback chapter.

Lit is seriously the worst board on 4chan. Timeskips hurt immersion, which is one of the big draws for fantasy. They tend to make the reader feel as though they have a bird's eye view of the story rather than being in it.

It has usefulness and value, but I would avoid it in fantasy unless you're using it to specifically cause disconnect or it can't be avoided.

Robert McCammon's old works are a lot of fun. Swan Song is a decent tome, They Thirst is straight trashy thriller but was a lot of fun.

You have to disconnect it from the stupid as fuck overarching Pendergast plot, but Preston & Child had some pretty great thrillers earlier in their run. Now they're pretty shit, but Relic, Reliquary, and Ice Limit are a favorite of a lot of people.

Just avoid the Pendergast books and anything associated with their OC Donut Steel James Bond wannabe after those and you'll be fine.

The Lady is kind of a shitty character since her development in the first half of the story doesn't really make sense. Her and Croaker's romance feels so forced and stupid. You can read Pratchett's books in a single day until the later ones.

Eric is like 90 pages. The only ones longer than 200 or so came out way later. Also you can just pick any one character series and never read the others. For example Death's are easily the best, you don't need to follow the Watch to read his.

Oh really? They aren't? I thought theyw ere selling everything to the highest bidder now. What's to stop them after the latest Hobbit "trilogy"?

Fuck me sideways, but screencap this: they are making the movie based on something formt he Silmarillion right now. Likely some shit fromt he Second Age, because that would allow for familiar characters to appear. I fucking swear.

The older ones are, yes. Equal Rites can be read in one or two shits, Light Fantastic and Colour of Magic will take you one or two evenings of casual reading tops.

Just look inside the first few pages and most prints have the books categorized by which character series they belong to, most of which comprise 4-6 books do varying length.

Moist only has 3, all of which were published later so they're longer. If you read Colour of Magic, you'll know everything you need to start any other series without being confused, and it's only like 150 pages. Discworld was originally a simple Mel Brooks style of comedy, it was only later with their success that Pratchett began attaching further significance to the series and making the books longer.

I think the Sword of Truth series is probably one of the most shamefully enjoyable things in the literary junk food genre that is 95% of the fantasy shit posted in this thread. It's like eating a whole pine of Ben & Jerry's ice cream. You look like a retard doing it, it's enjoyable as all hell, you'll probably regret it a bit later, and you don't want to brag about doing it but damn it's good.

The books get oddly preachy at times and the author does a poor job of hiding his Ayn Rand boner.

Fun books.

Also so much rape.

Sword of Truth is on the whole bad, but it has its moments and some pretty interesting ideas in terms of magic and world building.

>>
Getting into reading seems daunting.
>>
>>389276352
Main character became a God and the writer had no idea how to write about him, so he barely appears in the fourth book. The Muslim antagonist also is barely in the last book because he's so insanely strong.
Leisha is an insufferable Mary-Sue with retarded morals, a whore and all-round horrible person but everyone loves her for no real reason.
Rojer, the bard, is one of the only remotely interesting character because he's not instantly adored by every single person (even that starts to give way) and he has an interesting ability that's not completely OP next to the likes of Arlen. And then he gets killed off.

The playboy prince goes through an actual character arc, something that barely happens anywhere else in the books, and then he gets killed off.
The cripple Muslim, also one of the few good characters, gets killed off.

Shitting the bed doesn't even begin to describe the level of frustration that comes from reading this series.

I normally dislike the comic relief/trickster characters but ended up really, really loving Wayne as a character. What I probably liked most is that he wasn't JUST comic relief; dude was really competent and skilled and the chapters that come from his perspective are some of the more interesting ones. Or, similarly, when he talks seriously (usually to Marasi or Steris) and ends up legit surprising people that he's not just some dumbass sidekick.

I think because of this
>He wanted nothing to do with the films because the rights to them had been sold 30 years earlier and the family would not gain financially from the project.
It's a very traditional british father action. Shame thought. These situations always break up families. I think BB King's family is the same.
Also kek at Simon's response, just writing a book calling the stepmother a mistress and likely showing the dad as some uncaring bastard.

I think I need to go into detail with why I fucking loathe that book.
I should preface this with the detail that I dropped it around the assassin's trial part, which is around 4/5ths of the way in. Broke past the Sunk cost there.

I suppose First off is the fact that the main appeal of the MC is that, due to his cloistered upbringing, he's borderline autistic with interactions despite his physical prowess. However he's also a perfect manipulator when it comes to the various guilds he instantly takes over.
Second is the fact that he never once faces an equal in anything. I don't mind that he's good, given his upbringing, but he faces a grand total of one challenge in the form of another character in the entire book. There's absolutely no tension because of this.
Third is the characters. There's two basic ones until it's over halfway done. The first is the fawning sycophant. The second is the minor roadblock to be effortlessly defeated and humiliated. A grand total of One character doesn't fall into this pattern, and even he only presents a challenge for about 3 chapters.
Fourth is the sheer wasted potential. I've already been over the supposed autism thing, but another is the fact that The MC gets a sword that, while brilliantly crafted, is punishable by death if used by the wrong people. great premise, right? A powerful weapon that he has to be careful of even drawing, leading to potential tension if he uses it in the wrong time, or making you wonder if he'll be forced to draw it?
Nope. He gets a catch all magic note saying it's fine. All that potential pissed up a wall.

8 months later and I'm still fucking mad I wasted an Audible credit on it.
>>
>>389279763
All that are set in the First Law world, i.e. start with the initial trilogy The Blade Itself, Before They Are Hanged, and Last Argument of Kings
If you like these, the stand-alones (Best Served Cold, The Heroes, Red Country) are really good and you should read them in release order
>>
>>389279067
The books are shit and only get worse as they go on, but the setting could make for an interesting game.

I'd play a game focused on the BDSM rape-dungeon nuns.
>>
>>389279776
It is though. From my experience it takes so long to go through a story the occasional payoff doesn't justify all the time I spent on it. I can't even discuss books because most people, including me I guess, don't read and those who do are usually insufferable fedora tippers who think they are enlightened or something.

I didn't even mid that Kvothe was OP and the best at everything. He still had like -10 in Luck and eventually ended up where he is, which means he totally fucked up something. You can also ditch some things on an unreliable narrator which is cheap but whatever.
What annoyed me is whole deal with plot arcs that exist only to make him look cool and give him a power up. He went on a manhunt and killed a ton of people, now he has to come back for his reward. Nope, for no reason whatsoever he gets dragged out into a demon world and defeats a thousand years old sucubus, then has sex with her for years and becomes the best lover in the world. She also makes him a magical cloak because why not. Like, that whole bit existed to make him a sex god in addition to everything else he already is. It's not really mentioned anywhere later (yeah, he makes a song about his adventures and people sing it, cute) and overall effect of this on the story is that "Kvothe became good at sex". There could be one line like that somewhere in the middle of some random chapter and pretty much nothing would change.
The same goes for his ninjas stuff. It exists to make him a better than average fighter. I really, really doubt that their culture, hand gestures and weird ways of communications, that "lethani" philosophy and anything else will be relevant ever again. It served its purpose of making him a good fighter, now forget about that plot line.
>>
>>389280178
Why do you have to discuss stuff to make it worth it?
>>
>>389278194
Since I'm only 3 books in I definitely can't say how it ends up going, but the Lady is definitely weird. In the first book I appreciated how the evil overlord wasn't a complete mustache twirler, but like you said the building romance between her and Croaker is pretty weird. Oddly enough it's the sort of thing that probably would have put me off starting to read them had someone given me an overview of what I've read so far, but I'm glad I did read them since I'm having fun. Sort of reminds me of the Vorkosigan books in that vaguely space soap opera doesn't sound like it would float my boat but damned if I didn't enjoy the hell out of them.

Except I didn't read the most recent one. Person who got me in to those books in the first place read it and said it nearly ruins the series.

>>
>>389279901
Are the other books after the initial trilogy worth it if I absolutely hated how the third one ended up.

It just felt so forced on some of the parts and characters basically threw away any development they had even when it wouldn't make sense to. I understand it was supposed to be basically a bad end for them I just felt like it could have been handled better.
>>
>>389280178
Eventually you find authors that follow a certain pace you prefer.
Also the discussion part is just part of the misfortune of newer generations expecting instant payoff, so you have kids who actively refuse to read for the stupidest reasons.
>>
>>389280265
It's a just plus that would give me extra motivation, but in this case it actually detracts from it.
>>
>>389280349
I agree, it really bummed me out that absolutely every single character has to land in the shitter at the end
Best Served Cold has a good end for most people I'd say
The Heroes is basically Horror and Uselessness of War: The Book and also ends with the fact that those professional warriors in the North don't know anything else but war
Red Country has happy endings for pretty much everyone
>>
>>389280547
Then appreciate the stories. Somewhere down the line you'll encounter not absolute retards and be able to discuss it. It's better than coming across as an idiot who's only read the first chapter of the first harry potter.
