Why is self-inserting in vidya frowned upon?
Like when there's a ton of playable races and someone plays as regular Human he's seen as someone with little imagination.

Pic unrelated.
>>
I think it's just a backlash against the individuals who throw shade at people who don't play humans.

People being shitty because people were shitty to them.

Western mentality.
Everyone want to be unique snowflake.

It's not frowned upon in the east because their people have cog / ant worker mentality.

>Why is self-inserting in vidya frowned upon?
I think that most people just wouldn't care if you self insert or not. Hell, most people do so automatically. Nobody says "You killed Master Chief!" when they get shot in Halo, they claim that they were shot. And, hell, if you enjoy playing a game as Mario or Crash or whoever, why should anyone else care?

As for only RPing, the biggest problem is people who are just using it as an excuse to ERP. There are also people who get annoyed when you waffle around with RP dialogue when they just wanted to play the damn game and visit a dungeon. Most people who RP in a MMO or (worse yet) an online FPS are generally rather bad at it.

>Like when there's a ton of playable races and someone plays as regular Human he's seen as someone with little imagination.
This is something completely different. Most of the time this is just shitposting, like how calling the guy playing the elf gay or the guy playing a dwarf into fat hairy men. There are some smaller groups who are heavy into the escapism element and so dislike people who play "boring" humans, just as there are some groups who are heavy into the "stick with what you know" and treat playing as elves and dragons as special snowflake syndrome.

>Pic unrelated.

Self-inserting is something I really just can't understand.

You are you. Here in this world. The character you play as is someone somewhere else. You have different personalities, you grew up in different places, you have different social relationships and you look different. HOW can you say that "that is me"? It makes no sense. There is clear difference between you here and the character in a game(or any other media).

>but muh blank slates
Okay, it solves the personality problem, but what about all the rest? You can't solve them.

You are you here and you will never be someone else.

there is only one game which achieves true self-inserting and it's pic related. You are not someone else but you rather control something from beyond worlds. And it's just a robot. Everyone knowledges that the robot is not you but rather someone is controlling it from far away. And even when you ARE controlling some other character, it is explained trough in-game mechanics.
There is difference between you here and the characters you control and the game takes full advantage of it.

The point of role playing games is to actually role play. So just playing yourself does show a lack of imagination.

The whole appeal is that you can be whoever the fuck you want. I don't know there this lame-brained "the character I make is me" self-insert nonsense came from.

Why do some guys strictly play as girls? I understand if its for gameplay reasons since some characters are more comfy to play as than others, but I find it odd, out of personal choice, to always pick a girl. Thats how my tumblr tier brother is anyway. Once in a while I favor a female character like Jill Valentine, but he ALWAYS chooses the female option.

Because out of the game's immensely broad pool of possibilities for roleplay, you choose to limit yourself exclusively to qualities that you yourself have. You could be playing as a pious knightess, you could be playing as a savage barbarian, you could be a child prodigy wizard or a rebel hunter hiding in the woods, of any race or species, but you choose to just be the faggot behind the keyboard with his preferred costume. It's made even worse when you consider that going outside of your "comfort" zone in these things opens your eyes even further to the plights of differing factions within these games, and if all you do is build "yourself" as the same exact Rogue archetype and join Thieves Guilds and some basic shit like that, you lose out on the majority of the game's content and the work of the devs who add all of these different options for explorative people.
>>
>>389257386
Strictly? I don't know. I do frequently cross play, though, but it depends on the game. If a game has romance, like Mass Effect, then I play as male. If there is really no difference to the gameplay and it's just about looks, then I tend to play female because it's more fun to customize.
>>
>>389251125
It's more like humans are a boring race by default, since creators tend to give them no negatives but no interesting positives either, as well as making the human questline/storylines pretty generic too by making it relate to things in real life, where as other races have unique histories, government, culture, perspective, etc.

>>
>>389251125
I do not self insert but I usually do many playthroughs because I like to see where my own personal decisions bring me, and then try to actually roleplay as a certain character I create or play as.
>>
>>389257625

It's true to an extent. However, humans can empathize on other levels. Which is why stories like fables have resonated throughout the centuries. Transposing human traits like theory of mind, intent-driven behavior and, funny enough, empathy, onto unorthodox characters allows us to connect with them based on actions.

On the other hand, for something truly out there, you'd probably scare away a good deal of the audience. Not everyone is willing to go the extra mile to identify with a floating blob of organs.

>>389251125
You get to be a human all day everyday, why would you want to be one when you have the option to be something completely different?
>>
>>389257794
Exactly. The few times humans have been given a compelling backstory with their own traits that aren't just "average at everything" I've been happy to play as them. Developers shouldn't treat an entire race like the control group.
>>
>>389254717
Or maybe some people are looking for an immersive experience and find it comes more naturally with a character they can atleast somewhat relate to physically.

I honestly try to make a character with the same body type when its possible, used to try to put a belly on my characters now I try to make them scrawny. Just depends on what shape Im in at the time. I'm still a wizard or whatever within the lore of the game but it makes the connection to my character come much easier. Then I roll fun races on alts.

Also unless you're talking RP servers on an MMO, the roleplaying aspect is one of the least important aspects of an RPG to 90% of people. Most people just want gameplay or fucking around in a community.
>>
>>389257784

Pretty much this.

I suppose to me it is also a sign of lack of empathy. Deciding on a character and its traits means imagining how someone else thinks, trying to think about how this person would respond to each situation. It's a chance to act in a manner you normally wouldn't. To try to see how people different from yourself understand the world. It's an inherently human ability, it's a waste not to use it.

I dm and I joke with my players for playing midgets or knife-ears, but in truth they can bring what they want so long as I see effort and passion put into it while still respecting the setting.

Roleplayers in games, I usually see them erping because that's the hottest new meme, and video games in general arent prepared to let you roleplay. The modern rpg like Fallout 4 has more in common with Uncharted than Fallout 1 when it comes down to how the player treats their avatar.

I will say that I think the vast majority of people arent fit to make characters that are deeper than a surface level. Like most of the avatars you'll see on /v/ will just be sexy (or what the user thinks is sexy) women without a hint of history in their appearance. All that defines them is the looks. They're an elf because those ears do something for the gent that made her. Or they're a dwarf because THICC memes.

So for someone who might love making deep characters, I can imagine when they see all this, it's distasteful. Its distasteful because the drunken dwarf is a memetic character and so is the aloof elf. All the characterization of the original Tolkien races is reduced to easily digestible pornographic or surface-level thoughts.

Elves are made for raping.

Dwarves are manly men.

Humans are common.

Orcs are big, muscled brutes.

Nobody tries to understand the skeleton and muscles, just the skin. Its the same reason Marilyn Monroe is now a symbol. I bet only a handful of your people even have an iota of an idea of just how disturbed she really was.

So to answer your question after a long rant. Its an argument over bias and surface thoughts.

Reptiles are shit. barely above fish and insects as far as value. They are literal vacuum cleaners of the animal world. They are not even as intelligent as rats or even mice. They have no feelings, they lay eggs, sex is only a means to an end, and are cold mindless killers. Pathetic creatures really.

Not gonna do 200 because fuck you, but but on the concept of "giant lizard" and "droid" my immediate thought was Rango and Wall-E.
Many, MANY Disney films have anthros as lead characters, which fits the "giant lizard" archetype, though it might be an anthro fox, or mouse or dog.
I mean, Pixar has a huge film series called Cars where all the characters are literally vehicles.
Their most successful franchise features toys as the main characters.
And what about Monster's Inc? Yeah, Sully and Mike are really human looking.
Bicentenial man, Robots, Short Circuit, the Iron Giant.

Yeah, some of these feature humans too, but many don't and many only have them in relatively minor roles.

Most people aren't creative mate. Self-inserting is a way that they can understand the world without also thinking there's a middleman preventing them from being there.

They cant grasp the concept of the otherself and without a lot of natural empathy, it can be extraordinarily difficult to imagine anothers feelings and thoughts about something else. Now just imagine that person existing in a fantasy world where at any moment a mage might cause the world to end or an elf might shoot you in the throat for threading on a flower. For those people without the edge for characterization, trying to even fathom how another, entirely different person might feel about these things is impossible. Yet, they'll always know what they would feel like. That's why self-inserting exists.
