When the entire game is waiting for investments to pay out, it's amazing if you're doing something else while playing it. Fairly steep learning curve though, on account of needing a fair amount of knowledge of what to do before even unpausing for the first time.

i haven't played a game without listening to podcasts/talk radio in years. Games are boring by themselves and podcasts/talk radio is boring by itself so I need to combine the two.

My favorite podcast games have been Diablo clones (PoE and Grim Dawn) and 4x games (Civ 4 and 5 and Endless Legend). Especially after I've already played through the game at least once and basically know what's going on, so I can really focus on the podcast.

In terms of podcasts, I've found that lighthearted comedy podcasts are better. I've tried more serious stuff like history podcasts, but they are so information-dense that I come out of the episode not really understanding what's going on. So stuff like Jordan Jesse Go, My Brother My Brother And Me, Everything's Coming Up Simpsons.

He's definitely not a historian or researcher but the way he contextualizes the historical narrative I find fascinating. Which episode did you listen to? Prophets of Doom, the one about the Munster Rebellion, is one I can comfortably recommend to newcomers.
