Open world was never good. We came from 80s to 90s extreme open world where locations were identical; i.e. the entirety of gameplay consisted of sparsely located quest areas and everything was dungeon crawling with procedurally generated mobs. It was just repetition for the sake of repetition.

The prime example of what open world has always been to you millennials are games like morrowind and these games AGED LIKE MILK.

The better open world games like Jagged Alliance 2 incorporated strict pathing and the number of places you could go to was overall very controlled so the narrative wouldn't go to shit, and that's the only way these games could work.

There's just no way to make open world good if you look at the history of vidya. Good and open world are simply incompatible with each other.

Sandbox-styled open world games work. I think the problem is that most open worlds just exist as marketing i.e. Breath of The Wild, Skyrim, FFXV etc.

Games like PUBG, Just Cause, GTA, even Minecraft work as open world games.
