Jagged Alliance 2 and 2.5 are the only one worth playing.
2.5 is a standalone expansion to 2 and isn't as good as 2, but it's still okay and worth playing.
Don't play with the famous 1.13 mod on your first playthrough since it will just break your balls and make you hate the game.
Just start with JA2 Gold and read the manual.

I'm the guy telling him not to play 1.13, but there are exceptions where you should mod on your first playthrough, namely mods that patch bugs and restore cut content such as TSLRCM for KotOR2 or Co8 combined with Temple+ for ToEE.

I started with 1.13 and its additions like shit loads of guns, customisable tactical vests and weapon attachments greatly pleased the /k/ autist I am.
But yeah make sure you turn off the Drassen counterattack in the INI file.

You can reduce the amount of guns and use the old CtH and inventory systems if you prefer, and still get nice features like choosing how many rounds to fire in an autofire volley, and a suppression system that actually works.
