It's obvious who's tried VR and who hasn't. I'd say most people who've actually tried VR are impressed by VR. Personally i'm all in.
>>
>>389234190
I just wish there was more, deeper content. I know people who want to get VR but don't see the point until there's something like a VR MMO that they can just sort of live in.
>>

Also Vive's price dropped to $600 and will almost definitely be under $500 next year. Especially if they announce a next-generation version.
>>
I got a free google cardboard the other day and tried VR for the first time.

Even though it was just mostly looking around I had a good time playing around with it, I'm looking forward to the future in it.

If a legit VR headset didnt cost an arm and a leg, and more companies made stuff for it id give it a shot.
but as of my current knowledge no big game companies are really taking the risk with it
>>
Actually my Oculus is about to arrive any moment hopefully. 350 eurobucks is still a lot, so if it sucks I'll send it right back to Amazon, but at least at that price I don't feel like scum for just ordering it for testing purposes, although I'll honestly also return it if it's really good so I can get a new one with touch controllers.

>tfw finally freeing myself from the vr hype forever
It's like buying a ps 4 for Bloodborne all over again, but in case you're wondering I only lost like 20 bucks on that since I resold it for nearly my initial purchase price.
>>
>>389234252
There's plenty of content already but yeah at least Skyrim ( I never played it so this gives me an excuse) is getting VR support, it'll happen more and more as costs for VR gradually decrease.

I tried it and I'll be impressed once there's an actual fucking game for it and not a bunch of tech demos.
Maybe the gargantuan pricetag will be worth it once shovelware stops making up the bulk of both systems' libraries.

I thought the VR meme would die a bit slower than 3DTV, but it seems it died even faster. No wonder there still isn't a single hint of followups to the headsets, companies are probably thinking of pulling out already.

>>
>>389234260
real VR is about the quality and depth of simulation (e.g. star trek, tron, snow crash, .hack, sao). note that this is not dependent on any particular visual interface. you can make the simulation on a regular flat screen. but programming a simulation is hard, whereas asking a chinese factory to make mobile screens is easy. as it is, "VR" games have even shallower world simulations than what we're used to seeing in modern sandboxes. that's necessarily the case since the whole point of making a "VR" marketed game is to support the hardware gimmick, which is effort that is not being put into the rest of the game. fairly easy explanation if you just think about it

but instead, you fell for a 20 year old meme because you were too new to recognize it from the first time

Feminists will label it as objectification towards women and will do everything to get it banned.

Feminists don't want men to have women and they don't want men to create something that makes it so they don't need women. Your best bet is becoming Muslim, that way you can objectify women all you want and feminists won't hate you. Or you could become gay and fuck a trap.
>>
>>389237740
Oh yes, cause feminists stopped the pocket pussy. They can try all they want, it will happen once we get the tech for it. Soon as someone makes a real robot, someone will figure out how to make one you can fuck.

Being caught fapping while using vr would be something so fucking embarassing, mainly because you wouldn't be able to react and stop / put it away.

At least if someone walks in and your at it under normal circumstances you can react and put your dick away.

I was caught by my mom beating off years back, she didn't see anything because I reacted to the door opening but I could see she knew what was going on because she went back out really quick. It's just turning out to be another Vita situation though. No one is making anything for it, save for indies who are trying to keep it alive by themselves. its just not viable commercially , so you wont hear about it for like 10-15 more years, its always going to be pushed and moved towards end goal

stupid gimmicky controls are whats holding it back, and stupid low spec bullshit gimmick hardware is why it fails, you need to go for higher end, and start making proof positives rather than making marketed bottom of the barrel pleb shit, once we have god tier experience it can then be trickles down to commercial viability

hi OP. bought an oculus rift bundle from best buy last week because i knew zuccjew wouldn't let a permanent price drop happen.

my honest appraisal: 5/5 bretty good, $400 is about the most i'd pay for it

some pros:

>games like Superhot, Rez Infinite VR, Robo Recall, Lone Echo are cool, impressive experiences that i think flourish in VR and are worth the price of owning one at this point

>taking part in a live DJ rave with thirty other people wearing headsets in TheWaveVR was crazy and cyberpunk af, although i hate gay EDM shit

>rift/vive VR porn lives up the hype, it's honestly ruined all other porn mediums for me

>oculus home is actually alright and not overly intrusive (yet) like i expected facebook would do

>the oculus touch controllers are super comfy and feel fairly premium. i prefer holding them over the fuckhuge vive wands for sure

>feels premium, headphones are surprisingly good

cons:

>pixelation density is acceptable but wish it was higher

>bulky, wired (stock hdmi cord is definitely not long enough)

>uncomfortable (but possible) to wear with glasses. i've heard replacing the stock face padding alleviates this but whatever

>tracking is acceptable but not great with the two included sensors. thinking of getting one more to improve it

>for some reason there's way too many stupid little kids in Rec Room and in steam hangouts, but at least i can discriminate and avoid them because you can actually see somebody else's height in VR

>games are not long enough to warrant dropping more than $30 on anything out for VR right now

pic related, my rift the day i brought it home

Who do I have to kill so that these fucks stop designing their games with point and click teleport movement being a priority because "immersion"?

If you can get immersed by sitting on your fat ass watching a screen then you can be immersed without needing to physically walk places to get there and just using an analog stick instead.

>we have to design the game in a clever way that incorporates the player not being able to walk
>we can't so lets just make him point and teleport

It's why the new Resident Evil was so highly praised with VR, because they didn't pull stupid shit with it and you could just enjoy a normal good game with VR being incorporated into it slightly.

I just bought a oculus and have it for a week. The touch controllers are fucking perfection and dont feel like a gimmick at all.The resolution is a bit low but since some games require a gtx1080 that seems te be by design.
Theres also a big fucking difference between the oculus store and the Vive store.
The oculus store has some good games on there and puts the "demos" in a almost hidden place.

i think oculus enviroment is generally more polished. i've also just bought my rift (dk2) and since i'm poor, i use gtx770. now, i don't know if steamvr support for rift costs any performance, but (for example) Assetto Corsa or LFS was lagging (in bigger races) for me when i used openvr api, but ran absolutely flawlessly with native rift. It might be this wrapper performance cost and maybe it would run better on real vive, but i feel like vidya devs are putting some serious effort to optimize for rift, as opposed to steamvr.

This. The pixel spacing / density is much better than I expected it to be after owning a DK2.

Also, I can't say it the replacement interface foam makes things better for glasses as I don't wear any but I would recommend them anyway regardless- the stock foam padding kept just barely touching parts of my nose making for constant annoying itching. The VR cover foam does not bother me at all.

If the problem you have with glasses is that the glasses touch the Rift lenses, then the VR cover thing would help- they have an extended mount that will put your face further away from the lens.

All the haters and trash talkers ITT:

>Driven by hunger, a fox tried to reach some grapes hanging high on the vine but was unable to, although he leaped with all his strength. As he went away, the fox remarked 'Oh, you aren't even ripe yet! I don't need any sour grapes.' i just got my vive and i like it a lot. i've been playing it almost every day but usually not after work because i'm too tired to stand and move around. tired myself out playing pierhead arcade just running around throwing tokens into arcade machines trying to get higher and higher scores made me feel like a kid again, and i had a truly rewarding sense that i just had a lot of fun when it was over. i hadn't felt that kind of youthful pleasure for a very long time.

i don't know why people say it's dead. you're not going to wait until it's cheaper and buy it only for porn, you're gonna get the games too and find out just how much you enjoy them. once enough people have headsets the multiplayer games are gonna be much more fun again. and who knows what indieshit will take off in the meantime, there's potential for an indie title being the next smash hit.

all i really want is a good multiplayer arena shooter and/or VR gun game.

No longer hyped, but I still feel a buzz.

Th price needs to drop for me to invest in a VR headset. The shit is still too pricey for what little content is given. Elite Dangerous and other cockpit based games are great in VR, but everything else needs work. The teleport mechanic to get around in most of these games breaks immersion. I'd rather be confined to a single room and given many task, instead of teleporting around an open space because of limitation reasons.

Walking simulators and open-world don't work for VR.Not until we can get past the disjointed teleporting bullshit. On-rails, story driven, single space, with grand visuals are the current direction to go.

VR has a future, just not in it's current state. It's a gimmick right now, plain and simple, the VR porn will keep current VR a thing but honestly I think actually fun high end VR is a ways off.

Personally I think once VR tech improves, it would see more initial success in an arcade setting before an in home setting, it would off set the price barrier for people who want to try it, and people would be willing to pay to try it if the games or experiences with it were more solid. Then once the tech becomes easier to replicate for home usage, it could move to the living room again. It's the way it worked for video games in general and I think it's the best way for VR to go.

Another anon chiming in here, but we shouldn't let privacy concerns limit our use of any technology. There is info revealed about what nefarious things Facebook is/could be doing, but in the end most tech companies are moving towards more and more data collection and user tracking, which is ALWAYS able to be compromised and is at risk for being used for nefarious purposes no matter how good the security.

There's an argument some make about how supporting it will make it worse, so you shouldn't, but face it, the majority of people don't give a shit, so you and dozens of other people who make the decision not to support them will be just a blip, and have very little effect on what develops. Instead, if you really cared, you should be proactively engaging in changing policies and shit like that or something.

Privacy concerns are real, but less in the, "Should we let it happen?" vein than the, "Okay, how much are you going to pay me for my data?" vein. Part of why tech is so profitable is because they're giving you a product worth pennies on the dollar in terms of what our collective data is worth in the long run.

I think the problem with VR is that everyone is trying to use it for games. VR shines brightest when it's used for passive experiences like watching POV porn or going on simulated vacations. Yes, this is in fact NOT jack into the Matrix tier VR. Nobody buys it expecting that. What it does do well though is simulate that kind of experience in a small area. It still gives you a really good sense of depth perception and world interaction. How come so many faggots constanrly complain that this tech didn't start out as some crazy sci-fi shit we aren't even able to accomplish yet? Even if we somehow were capable of making such a true VR device you'd be hard pressed to even find millionaires capable of obtaining a VR device and needed augments. Literally only research teams developing it would ever even have access to the tech for many mamy years before anything ever became commercial for big businesses. There'd practically be no home use devices on the market with such an insane price point that the tech would obviously have since we have absolutely nothing on the market like it or even the technology to make something like.

The vive is more expensive, has shittier headstrap and controllers, and worse games. Using revive to play Oculus exclusive games means you're going to have a worse experience than if you were just playing off a rift.

Seriously, you can't go wrong with the Rift. Most of its exclusives are some of the best VR experiences out their and most of them are free. If tracking is still an issue just buy another sensor. Still would be cheaper than the vive.

Not him but what are you talking about? Oculus isn't putting in any restrictions and one time they did put in DRM was reversed quickly. It's not that they're restricting what users can do but more that they're not spending resources to work compatibility into their software.

Take Microsoft for example, they said their headsets will support SteamVR but it'll take time after they release to release the support. It's not such an easy thing as just flipping a switch, there are actual differences that need to be accounted for in both hardware and software so that things are compatible with everything else. Keep in mind that displays these days are made to follow all the same standards, which is why they're compatible with everything, but VR headsets aren't. There are many standard things they do, but as a whole, VR headsets, the whole VR rendering pipeline, is not standardized. Neither is the control inputs as the motion controllers have different buttons and functions, etc.
