Why is the game industry so corrupted by greed nowadays?

20 years ago we got amazing shit like pic related that was made by people who actually liked video games and weren't doing it to appeal to shareholders.

What the fuck happened between then and now?

BECAUSE FUCKING MONEY!

Why is it cool? BECAUSE MONEY!
Why is it corrupt? BECAUSE MONEY!
Why is it mainstream? BECAUSE MONEY!

Video games are our generations cinema or radio or telephone. Where older generations collect tickets or pass out infront of the TV ours stays up playing games. And its a massive fucking money maker and generally everyone in our generation enjoys it. So of course they're going to try to reach as much people as possible, put forth no fucking effort and try to milk everyone for cash.

How can greed motivate people to create shitty games that don't sell?
>>
Take off the nostalgia goggles gramps, if you took them off you'd see that games back then were just as shitty today, if not worse

Console tech got better, visuals got better.
But it got more expensive as a result.
Devs also wanted the prestige of Hollywood so they started trying to imitate it.
Obviously, resources aren't unlimted, so they had to cut back on gameplay mechanics for visual fidelity.

This is an oversimplification, but that IS a major factor. Not the only one, but a major one.
Also, see pic related.

PATH OF LEAST RESISTANCE and the fact that they attempt manufacturing methods in an artistic field which is entertainment....its sad that I hate saying " artistic ", because post modern soiled that word. Consider the following, FALLOUT 4 is fucking shit, BUT it is an okayish time waster and something to fiddle with. That combined with a wall of marketing and media exposure it sells.
>>
>>389227049
>What the fuck happened between then and now?

DLC.

The reason why we never got TimeSplitters 4 was because the devs took a proof-of-concept version to the publisher and they were told "it had too much content, and if we gave people a game that was complete then they wouldn't buy the DLC" [paraphrasing], so the game was cancelled.

What happened is the same thing that happened to movies: Analytics and focus groups. Everything is designed for mass appeal and formulated based on demographic. Anything risky is frowned upon and scrapped for the safe option instead. The media you consume is no longer a labor of love, but a work for profit.

And it's only going to get worse since today's children are going to grow up thinking its normal for their media to be created with computer algorithms.

Gaming grew up, like every other medium, and became all about money. A lot of people say 'Oh, it's just nostalgia, old games were no different' but it's not true. If you go back now and play a game made around 2000 or before, even if you've never played it before, you'll feel something different. Games had life in them, personality, soul, whatever you want to call it. It's a tangible thing. As well as being far more creative and having thought put into their design. Now it's all about higher texture resolutions, cinematic experiences, and making money.

Happened to movies, music, anime, even literature. The bigger the medium gets, the more generic and lifeless it becomes.

Here's a fun little game: Name a successful movie released this year that isn't capeshit.

Ironically, this poster is a perfect example of why videogames have gone to shit.

People love to blame the devs (and rightfully so, it is at least 50% their fault) but the truth is, the modern gamer doesn't really want a good game. They want to follow quest markers, watch cutscenes and get epic loot.

You make a modern gamer play Thief 1 or 2, and they'll literally see nothing good about it.

I'm playing Thief Gold right now and it's the most engaging and exhilarating bideo gaem I've played this year. I'm only a bit more than halfway through it and I already can't wait to get started on the Metal Age.

Too many factors to mention.

The appeal changed though, and it isn't as profitable to market to core gamers as it once used to be.

So, now the attention has shifted towards more global inclusion and the younger generations taking over.

People who aren't core gamers aren't likely to devote the same amount of time investment in challenging games and are more prone to be less critical of games generally. Some of the reasons to 'why' at least, AAA gaming has become more streamlined.

>>389232421

I agree partially with this. Most game studios seem to run like factory assembly lines. The work environment is generally poor. People are getting overworked and underpaid which only seems to benefit the upper business management.

Glassdoor gives a slight insight into how some of the more acclaimed studios operate.
>>
>>389227049

Looking Glass closed. Pure and simple. They made Ultima Underworld, they made System Shock, they made Thief: The Dark Project and Thief 2... Some of the greatest games of all time...

And they went broke.

Right after they made Thief 2 (in my opinion, the greatest game ever, either that or Thief 1)

Bullfrog went under, Maxis died a slow death, Valve ended up making more money selling games then making them, Ion storm burnt out, the team who made Doom had all left Id by the end of the 90s, Ken Levine decided to nuke Irrational, Rare got bought out by Microsoft and the entire team that made the Nintendo classics left, Origin were fucked over by EA...

The list goes on.

It is fucking depressing though

Truth is, some dudebros in a garage could still make the game of the year, perhaps at the cost of lower technical graphic gimmicks and no voice acting. It's just not in the current mores anymore, not just in vidya but in all the "tech" jobs that were new 20 years ago but have fossilized very quickly. Programmers want the easy-but-slavish corporate life and health insurance and all that stuff.

You used to get by with 1 guy in each department. Now everything is done in 'teams.' Teams of grovelling retards just trying to make a living rarely innovate as much as one or 5 dedicated geniuses do. Indie games now cannot afford to put in the effort because they will almost never compete with AAA because teams have the advantage of marketing and publisher support. Back then, AAA games could be made with an indie sizes team. Not anymore. The time spent on graphics, demo reels, cgi, huge amounts of mindless content, has a lot to do with it.

Thief 2 bankrupted LGS.
Making games as intricate and smart as Thief and System Shock makes them less appealing to a wider audience who are too lazy to get invested in a game.

As the industry expanded this wider audience became too powerful for publishers to ignore and so they refuse to fund experimental and tightly focused games, instead they favour bland broad game experiences that appeal to the most people.
That's why you always see games advertised as letting you 'do things your own way'.
It means that you don't need to learn the way the game works. It means that they didn't want to restrict the player to immerse them.
>>
>>389244959

Publishers also likely impose certain creative restrictions.

There's a diagram that describes and details the design thinking behind AAA development, wherein 10% of the game is allowed to attempt/introduce something new.

Also the game has fucking garbo sound design and the only thing that makes sound when you walk on it is shards of broken glass.

Thi3f was bad but Thi4f is so, so much worse.
