Fallout 4 has excellent factions

Minutemen were fucking annoying.
Railroad were tumblr stupid.
Institute were assholes.
BOS were pretty cool.
Raiders are raiders.

I feel like the real issue isn't so much that they have pros and cons, it's more that none of them are particularly compelling. This is honestly a problem throughout the whole game: nothing is interesting. The kidnapping of your son is meant to be a gripping mystery, but it just feels lazy. You're never given a reason to give a flying fuck about your son except for the fact that he is your son. Boston has one major city; you're never made to care about it or its inhabitants. The factions all have their pros and cons, but none of them are anchored with any sense of real personality beyond broad, caricaturish strokes; interesting individual characters can do this, but Fallout 4 has only a handful, and they all join your party. New Vegas had much more well fleshed out factions with personality and nuance, often anchored by individuals who endeared themselves to you in some way, which makes it a much more interesting experience to boot.
