That said, the way they navigated the difficulty was genius. Make the front half of the game mildly challenging, give a good note to end on to newcomers or casuals, but put the real meat into the title defense, and just go off the rails with boxer patterns.

Mac growing up in the Bronx NYC mid 80's starting out as a cheezy prize fighter then becoming an undisputed world champion taking on all sorts of boxers, street fighters, mma fighters, traditional martial artist.

Everything about Mac's character was inspired by 80's movies like Rocky, Karate kid, ect this whole underdog rising story. It's a shame Nintendo views him as a joke and he's made into a laughing stock in Smash bros.

I've put a lot of thought into the Punch-Out!! series as I have spent years playing the games. I didn't get to play the original version of the arcade game, I think my first play had that dude in coveralls on the unit, it also had the 2-handlebars and rotating screen.

The point though, is that I'm pretty sure that the series is really REALLY not meant to be serious. In that each fight is less of say, a sport type thing, or an action game, and more like a fast paced puzzle game. Each of the mechanics seem to cultivate a problem-solving reaction rather than a variable action solution. You're given 4 tools to solve these problems (punch high/low, dodge/duck, block, power-move) every fight is a puzzle though, where you're looking for tells and avoiding traps.

I know it goes against the spirit of the original games, but if we're looking for spinoff games to keep the franchise alive I think the best solution is a traditional 2d fighter.

Every moveset is pretty much there for you already. Yeah everyone would play like Balrog with only punches, but I'm sure some kind of gimmick could be thought up that would fit the theme of the series and set it apart from other fighters.

God I remember this game so fondly. It was the most kickass game on the Wii and I remember all the times I had to retry my fights with Bald Bull and Sandman. The former because I was too stubborn to not just dodge his strongest attack but was garbage at the timing and the latter because his Title Defense battle called for me to basically stop blinking during rounds.
