It draws the player in because you see this large, open area of flat quicksand and suddenly you notice this large vortex of sand, completely contrasting the rest of the landscape. It invites the player to experiment and be curious.

Each kingdom seems to have a "main" area, a major sublevel or two, and various platforming sections strewn about. There's also some sort of day/night mechanic that changes up things as well.

In terms of sheer size, it seems to vary. New Donk is roughly the same size as a 64 stage at ground level, but Tostarena is fucking massive (but there's a lot of seemingly empty space).
