Unless I'm missing something? I heard that quiet is supposed to be some contrast to the homo erotic undertones of the rest of the series or something. Can someone explain?

Kojima pussed out. Quiet was meant to be, from concept, a nonverbal and practically naked sniper, and his artist made her design with that information in mind. It was an aesthetic choice, and Kojima worked in the story reason later, because he wanted to have a neat tie-in with the game's overarching story and plot devices. There was never meant to be an artistic statement behind it, and the whole reason Kojima said there was is because he lost his spaghetti every time someone questioned the character's design. He could've easily said: "Aesthetic choice, and I wanted an inverse-EVA." But he didn't.
