Well a lot of Street Fighter IV's success came from appealing to nostalgia by starting from the crazy popular Street Fighter II and going it's own route with it. Similar to MVC3. Meanwhile Street Fighter V and MVCI don't have massive nostalgia push to benefit on top of their own flaws.

And yet they keep releasing books of it every few years. At least the last Darkstalkers book had a handful of development sketches in addition to the promotional art everyone's already seen. I loved seeing the sketches for Donovan's prototype Blizzard Sword and Kill Shred (which fit in with the versions people remember being in the location test builds), and Huitzil's satellite crane drone thing.

Apparently Capcom dev Katsuya Akitomo first got the idea to make a monster-based fighting game during a trip to Comic Con where he saw that all the classic Universal monsters were still popular fixtures in the media. So if it weren't for Comic Con, Darkstalkers probably wouldn't have existed.

Makes that whole "Darkstalkers Are Not Dead" farce they pulled at Comic Con a few years ago all the more painful.

Also Akitomo says that Alex Jimenez was responsible for the characters' names. I remember reading in interviews that they had Capcom USA staff come up with the characters' names, but it's nice to have a specific individual to credit them to.

Also, for the cases where characters have different names in Japan, the international names are the originals. They changed a few for Japan because the devs thought some of the names Jimenez came up with would sound funny to Japanese audiences. So it's nice to know that the whole "That name sounds dumb, let's change it" thing goes both ways in localization.

Probably a typo, meant 15 colors + transparency. Darkstalkers sprites, like most sprites of the era, use 16 color palettes, but one of those colors is the transparency mask, so you really only have 15 colors to use. If you need more colors than that, then you have to start combining multiple sprites using multiple palettes. For example, Huitzil's transformed lower half when he jumps has its own palette, which is why ist has greens and blues and such that the rest of his sprites lack.
