They're changing the main combat system from the charge style to something called State Combo, which apparently changes your attacks based on the state of the enemy. I haven't seen any more indepth explanation of the controls though and the little gameplay I've watched doesn't really make it clearer how it works. 6 tried to "innovate" by introducing a brand new combat system which ultimately didn't change much except for slightly reducing the amount of moves you had. It also had one or two nice mechanics strewn around but in exchange it had far less characters (with some that stayed being clones without even their own Musou mode) and content as well as some really poor decisions overall.
7 was an almost complete reversal, they went back to the original charge gameplay style and brought almost all the characters back as well as introducing a mechanic for equipping two weapons at once to swap between their movesets. Some characters were still clones but everyone had unique Musous and extended charge attacks for their preferred weapon. It also had a lot to do and one of the best told story modes in the series.
8 was essentially just a refinement of 7, but that was exactly what was needed. All the clones got their own weapons, there were new what if scenarios and there was other new stuff too.
9 so far looks like it's making the exact same mistakes 6 did, except what it's adding (an open world) at least looks more interesting.

I don't think so, they're average but decent. The cutscene direction and how they flow into gameplay is top notch though, the latter suffering a bit due to them letting you pick between multiple characters each stage in 8. But this shit is still incredible and has yet to be beat as an ending.

I wouldn't mind characters having similar weapons if they kept different movesets, but this is pretty obviously just clones. They're remaking the combat system and didn't want to make 86+ new movesets. Fuck 'em.

The new combat looks like even more simplistic trash than normal DW. Movement is still janky as fuck despite the "realistic" artstyle. Enemies still just stand around waiting for you to kill them. Open world looks like barren, pointless trash. Of all the action series that could go open world DW was one that would benefit the least. They're not even doing hypothetical routes, so what the fuck is the point of having an "open world" based on a preset story? Basically the entire game is just going to get boiled down to about 10-15 "key" battles and then everything else is just gonna be random shit generated on the world that you grind through in order to unlock the main story battle.

No one bought them for DW8 because all 83 characters were decloned and unique, there was no point in paying money for new weapons when everyone was unique.

Weapon switching is dumb as hell since you get characters using movesets that are clearly not designed for them, like giving Dong Zhuo the flute or some shit.

Instead of weapon switching it should be officer switching, where you pick like 2-3 characters and the others act as normal NPCs until you switch to them.

What the fuck happened to Koei? They were so good at avoiding clones for years. DW was finally fully uncloned. None of the collaborations had clones. Now DW is again full of them, possibly more than ever before, and Fire Emblem has a fair number of clones too.
