Pure luck, and Motoi Sakuraba copy+pasting his Star Ocean soundtracks into the games, were the only things that made the originals any good.

Is that really it though? The older ones felt really involved. Had stories and even RPG elements added to them.
But for quite some time now they've all felt very cookie cutter and similar. While having stripped most of the aforementioned elements.
