SoC and you can stop there too unless you REALLY like it. Clear Sky is okay, adds some new stuff but lots of recycled content. CoP is pretty boring.

Don't let tryhards convince you the Complete Mod is bad. It goes against the essence of Stalker with some desicions, but is great as a starting point.

The first one. It's also the best one and the most balanced between linear story and open world exploration. You don't need any mods for a first playthrough, vanilla is fine. Check the generals on /vg/ for tips or if you're confused about some stuff, they're usually pretty comfy.

2 is the least liked, the most linear, still alright.

3 is more open world and exploration-based, perhaps the favorite of the fan base, but a first-time player wouldn't enjoy it as much.

also remember to play at least Hard difficulty or you're gonna have a really bad time

(normal/easy difficulty gives both you and the enemies more health, making the combat bulletsponge-y)
