It's the ultimate open world, completely empty, with no content of any kind except crap to pick up and endless samey dungeons with no purpose just insert dick receive rewards. It's truely skyrim dumbed down to the point where no rpg or video game elements exist, just an open world ripe for exploring, with nothing to find.
PERFECTION

Oh right, no inventory system.
Really making steps backwards in video game design there, nintendo.
>>
>>389145715
The sheer ability to actually traverse the world without being restricted definitely is. And on top of that they made the traversing a minigame in itself. Most other open world games limit you to what you can walk (flat ground, hills) or designated areas to climb. Also, you can't make a thread praising Zelda in any way on this board, anon.
>>
>>389145715

BOTW, Prey, Metroid, Mario, Xenoblade, The Evil Within 2, and Resident Evil 7 are all great.
It's almost shocking if you compare this year to last year. Last year was terrible for games.
>>
>>389148485
Botw has invisible walls and cliffs that are never meant to be scaled.
Morrowind is 100% traversable, even without levitation things like the jump spell, or even acrobatics.
Not to mention most of the artifacts in the world are hidden in hard-to-reach places that need you to make the best use of your traversal mechanics.
It's not just "climb mountain slow as fuck, over and over and over again, for no real reason other than to watch link's fuckboi ass jiggle around in slut attire.

>That's like saying movies as a whole are bad.
no open world is a genre, so it's like saying all horror movies are shit, which in fact they are.

Hating open world games is a /v/ meme, I am actually a big fan of open world games since i played hunter as a kid. I have played a lot and zelda always does their open worlds right. WW and BotW being the best of incorperating fun traversal with a sense of wonder and exploration.

thing is with open world games is that we are over saturated with them. GTAIII started the craze and we have had so many poor open world games that people are tired of them.
Games like ass creed had forced open world in them and even they could not get the open world right until 3.

Could somebody for once explain how BOTW was a masterpiece in open world design instead of just parroting it
I liked the game but pretending the open world isn't filled with filler, copy pasted boring activities and overall nothingness is just stupid. It has great exploration but so do many many other games

>Morrowind is 100% traversable
it's not though. Morrowind is a good game but it's not traversable like zelda, and yeah it doesn't have invisible walls but it is an island. idk if it has invisible walls out at sea, I've never swam it.
BotW is a landmass, has invisible walls and expanse georges that kill you.
>>
>>389145715
Too bad its a shitty Zelda title though...
>>
>>389149560
Imo it has nothing to do with the open world design, but their approach to making you explore. You reveal the map and it's nothing but topography. Every other openworld game you unlock the map and see a million quest/npc markers all over the goddamn place and you say fuck it. Since the map never had anything on it I always wanted to see for myself. The rest I can't explain. They just did something right.
>>
>>389149065

>>
>>389149625
So how is botw traversable again if you can't traverse massive parts of it?
Because you can go from any one point on morrowind to any other point in one of many ways, not just climbing and gliding.
>>
>>389149560
this>>389150030
If we are just talking about the open world not the god tier physics it has a sense of wonder that I haven't seen in other open world games.
You have to climb to higher areas to see distant points of interest and get a lay of the land. The ubisoft esque towers are just to reveal the topography.
>>
>>389150030
>>389150353
You're acting like the fact the towers only reveal topography is some sort of elaborate feature.
Same bullshit applies to a dozen open world games.
And unlike most of them those games actually have things to reveal in them, unlike botw which has nothing to reveal ergo nothing is revealed.
>>
>>389150264
>you can't traverse massive parts of it?
you can traverse every part of zelda, the parts you cant traverse are the parts that aren't in the game map i.e the borders.
climbing, gliding,on foot, horseback, sailing, physics jumping (like stasis on an object)
Iirc Morrowind only has walking, levitating and acro jumping
>>
>>389150264
What exactly do you mean by "can't traverse massive parts of it"? The only place in botw you literally can not traverse is the lava in the goron area. Literally everywhere else in the game you can walk/climb/cryo across the whole damn ocean if you want.
>>
>>389149625
>BotW is a landmass, has invisible walls and expanse georges that kill you.
Those are the boudaries of the world. There are NO invisible walls within the game. What did you expect? For Nintendo some how manage to magically produce a game which had no end to its world? A world that go infinitely forever? Should Link get into a space ship and fly to another world?

This is level of shitpost complaints about the game. Utterly retarded nonsense.

You are saying that like it's impossible to put up visible barriers so the player can't go through them. Invisible walls are the absolute laziest way to prevent player movement, no matter how you try to twist the situation.

It's not a big deal, of course, but it's still annoying. It takes you out of the game to remind you that you are, indeed, just playing a game.
>>
>>389153334
This desperate.

The 'invisible wall' is then end of the gaming world. That's all. You cannot go any further
There are NO 'invisible walls' are not within the game world stopping your progress or obstructing your movement.

To be far, Nintendo manage the situation quite well. Try to sail the sea to he east and the wind blows you back, try to cross the massive gorge in the North and the wind blows you back. These are less immersion-breaking than hitting an invisible wall but come the fuck on, it's a limp-dicked attempt at criticism. There are no invisible walls or boundaries within the game world.
>>
>>389153448
GTA SA

>>389153617
>NO 'invisible walls
you are a retard and can't read. Why are you contradicting yourself in the same sentence saying there is and is not any invisible walls in the game...how retarded does one comment have to get.
The "you are at the end of the world cant go further message" is shown, when you reach an invisible wall, hence there is invisible walls in the game, end of discussion.
If you actually followed the post instead of being a massive retard, anon was talking about Morrowind not having invisible walls limiting the player and BotW having them.

FYI a better wa for them to have dealt with the Gerudo desert was for it to get extremely hot and kill you quite fast and no clothes would help, or just get you lost and return like in OoT desert
>>
>>389154121
No you stupid fuck. No matter how much you try and twist it.

The invisible walls in BotW are simple the end of the world. Because the world has to end at some point.

That's different from other games which put invisible walls WITHIN the scope of the game to limit player movement or funnel the player in a certain direction.

BotW has none of that restrictive bullshit. The player is completely free.

What don't you get? Do you understand ANYTHING about game design?
>>
>>389154121
So if gerudo desert let you walk endlessly across an empty repeating desert instead of reaching a wind barrier, then botw would be a good game for you? That's all it would take?
>>
>>389154590
Different anon here, you are actually being retarded. We understand that nothing restricts movement or limits player movement, but THERE are invisible walls in the game. Just because it's at the boundary of the map doesn't mean it isn't an invisible wall. Obviosusly it's a non-issue due to there location placement, but you can't say they don't exist.

FYI, there are also invisible walls if you try to leave the plateau without the glider.

BotW is a god tier game, one of teh best I have ever played, the invisible walls in the desert are not an issue to me, though i was hoping for a sandstorm and return like lost woods mechanic or OoT desert. it's a necessary game design mechanic though I am inclined to think that there might be more to the desert in the DLC.
Gerudo Desert is my favourite area in the game.

That why I put 'invisible walls' within quotation marks.

Because it's not the same thing as what is traditionally reffered to within gaming as 'invisible barriers' or 'funnelling'.

Show anywhere WITHIN the game - not the edge of the godamn world - where the player's movement or progress gets restricted by any kind barriers. Not being able to get off the plateau is reduntant because it's a tutorial area - it's a design choice rather than an example of ineptitude or game design skill by the developer. Which is the entire point of this argument. Tell me I'm wrong.

You're wrong because you didn't just explain what you meant in the first place instead of assuming everyone automatically knows what your quotes were trying to convey. Instead you autistically go on and on repeating the same thing in different ways, finally changing what you meant when multiple people called you retarded.
>>
>>389155674
lost woods isn't an invisible wall.
I'm assuming you mean gliding in? it's a reset.
to my knowledge gerudo 2 walls are the only invisible walls in the game

This place is called Nintengaf for a reason.
>>
>>389155708
>But it's not there for the same purpose is it?
Its still there for the generalized purpose of acting as a barrier to prevent/restrict player access into an area. Whether it's used to guide a player or act as a boundary is irrelevant to it still being an invisible wall.
>>389156014
>it's a reset.
That's still a form of an invisible wall anon.
>>

1. Game doesn't set objectives for you. The player always decides what to do next.
2. Content is placed strategically so that the player is always finding something to investigate. Might be a tower (easiest to find and leads to everything else), shrine, korok, landmark, chest or whatever. The game keeps the player busy at all times. The radar exists to help on this.
3. No restrictions on movement. Lets the player execute whatever he sets out to do.
4. Pretty much all of the content is hand crafted. Nothing generated. Even the copy pasted stuff requires some adaptation by the player, so no two discoveries are all the same.
5. Variety of content. Shrines, towers and Korok seeds (for which there are several puzzle types), encampments, those big shrines, special enemies, special shrines with puzzles on the overworld, labyrinths, memories, etc. This isn't brought by the core mechanics, it's just a sign of the detail put into the game.
5. Meaningful rewards. Korok seeds are valuable, and the weapon degradation system makes you want to keep scavenging. Personally, I wish more fights were mandatory, so that you weren't constantly full. Really undermines this point.
6. Very flexible combat mechanics using physics and their "chemistry engine". This means that no matter the tools, the player can find a way to overcome a challenge. You never really feel powerless to do something, and you are never prevented of getting the rewards you want.
Of course, like in any game, how much these points are felt vary from person to person.
>>
>>389156268
>That's still a form of an invisible wall anon.
iit's not they are different things. Gerudo desert is a blatant invisible was, as if you can walk into a wall.
If you are classing resets, barriers ect then the entire map is bordered by invisible walls, the plateau without glider and the entirety of lost woods.
>>
>>389155915
Go back and read every single one of my posts, I consistently said the same thing over and over again. It can't be helped that you cluesless kids understand next ti fuck all about game design.

This is why people who UNDERSTAND video games praise BotW. While the fucking uneducated morons throw shit at it.
>>
>>389156643
>If you are classing resets, barriers ect then the entire map is bordered by invisible walls, the plateau without glider and the entirety of lost woods.
Yes because all of those are cases of an invisible wall. Another one is the sky ceiling. I'm not sure why you are attributing invisible walls with such a negative connotation. They have played a very important role in all games.
>>
>>389156313
>Meaningful rewards
I don't agree on this and this is one of the main gripes I have with the game. Well yeah I understand and actually enjoy the degradation system, It forces the player to continue to explore for new gear. The rewards for exploring are crap. It's either a weapon, or gems. Nothing really substantial that makes me excited I found something.

>>
>>389156863
Now you are fucking assuming shit just because people called you out. I love BotW; but I'm not going to say there aren't any invisible walls withing the game because that's blatantly false.
>I KNOW GAME DESIGN, YOU IDIOTS DON'T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT GAME DESIGN.
Like I said before, invisible walls have a purpose within games, and attributing negative connotations to them without understanding their significance is stupid. You are a fucking retard.
>>
>>389157013
>The rewards for exploring are crap. It's either a weapon, or gems.
Regardless, they are valuable. This must've been the first game where I was actually excited to get Rupees. Weapons would be better if there were more sinks. The game gives you way more weapons than what you need.
>>
>>389156884
they aren't all invisible walls anon. an invisible wall is where you are walking into a wall, like what would happen irl if you walked into a wall, and that is only in gerudo desert.
A reset, like lsot woods, or a barrier, wind barriers blowing back like trying to glide north or sail on the sea, are completely different things.

This convo started when anon said that morrowinds traversal is more free than BotW and that morrowind has no invisible walls limiting the player but BotW has.
>>
>>389157307
>they are valuable.
not really anon, It's not like rupees are scarce in the game and weapons are fickle, especially once you know that royal are the best and only ones worth using. It would have been nice to have found perm weapons hidden in the world and gear. or having collectable missions but the item is randomly in the world.

Worse thing about these weapons to is that I have all the spoof amiibo gear which I haven't used and don't want to because of the shit rng which are taking up my space, so less space for weapons.
>>
>>389157240
Not him but it's actually you who is retarded. That anon is talking sense. You have to be dumb as fuck to think the barrier at the end of the world is same thing as putting invisible walls in the game world iself which impede progress.
>>
Why does /v/ get so triggered by BOTW so easily? either by praising it or criticizing a botw thread is bound to get a bunch of fucking replies.
>>
>>389158047
It's the Undertale effect. It got popular so now contrarian hipsters must shit on it on sight and rabid fanboys must defend it at all costs.

>You have to be dumb as fuck to think the barrier at the end of the world is same thing as putting invisible walls in the game world iself which impede progress.
Either you are samefagging or you are just as retarded as him. An invisible wall is an invisible wall, no matter where it's location is.

yeah but limitations like a barrier are not the same as an invisible wall. That is like saying an apple and an orange are the same thing because they are both fruit.

>>389158181
seems like we get an insane amount of butthurt people because of BotW

because you are retarded.
I have never seen that before but that looks like a wind barrier, if he was gliding not swimming it would be pushing him back. idk as hes swimming but hes still able to swim into it.
Gerudo desert is an invisible wall, there is not bush back it's just a straight wall that you hit and cant walk past.
>>
>>389145715
too much to do in it with no real direction I had too many choices I got bored because I couldn't decide what to do.

Never finished it.
>>
>>389159218
.> idk as hes swimming but hes still able to swim into it
No he clearly isn't, watch the fucking video.
>if he was gliding not swimming it would be pushing him back
But he's not gliding so you can't use wind as an excuse. I'm done discussing this with actual children; consider this your victory.
>>
>>389159218
>I have never seen that before but that looks like a wind barrier.

It's not. If you're walking on the land mass above it you literally can run against an invisible wall with climbable looking stuff beyond it. The only really disappointing part of the game for me but there's no real way around it, the world has to have an "edge" of some kind unless you make a map that wraps.
>>
>>389159783
if he stopped swimming, would he be pushed back?
You are clearly too unintelligent to understand the difference between a wall, that cannot be seen and a physics based barrier

Technically false.

Not the tops of mountains and hills. Just grass and slopes, with only interactive elements being animals and occasional bokoblins at night. Even Korok puzzles are uncommon.

Don't forget upgrades and uses for recoloring.
