Will Maxis ever come back with another original idea? Or did Will Wright kill the company when he left.

I want them to make something as ambitious as Spore, but actually good.

Maxis is dead, dude.
When Maxis began developing Spore, EA opened a new studio called the Sims Studio to make the sims 3 and all future sims games.

In 2009 Will Wright left Maxis and 2012 the sims studio was renamed Maxis Redwood.
The original maxis studio developed the failure that was SimCity in 2013 and the studio was closed in 2015, meaning the "Maxis" that continues to exist isn't really Maxis at all, but another renamed EA studio.
It's another Infogrames/Atari situation.
