How to get into Hokuto no Ken:

Anime for first time, there is a bit of filler but only at the start and half of it is actually much needed character development that manga didn't have at the beginning since it was written as a one-shot due to not expecting success.
It also rotates some early events chronology to make better sense than in the manga.
And most importantly while artwork obviously isn't anywhere near as good as manga, the voice acting, music and direction are absolutely top of the line 10/10 material.

The anime adapts all of the manga up to chapter 210 (beginning of Volume 24), after you're done with that you can either read manga from the start but mind you that the scans are mostly terrible and very rough translation, especially in the middle, or you can read the manga from Volume 24 to the end which is the portion that the anime didn't adapt.

You should also read the interquel set between events of HnK1 and HnK2 that Hara made for 30th anniversary of the series, naturally it's canon.

This is an arbitrary example but I worked at a hospital for 2 years as a patient transporter. 90-95% of my co-workers were women and you would often hear them talk shit behind each others back when in the cafeteria. They didn't do that though. They added a lot more characters if anything. Problem is that all the new ones were simpler and less complex in terms of movesets and so on than the returning Ken's Rage 1 characters, so what did they do? They gutted the returning characters' movesets to match the new characters.
It's also why jumping and jump combos are gone, because they couldn't be bothered to animate jumping and make jumping combos for the new characters.
But there is one thing that Ken's Rage 2 got right, and that is the story mode which is MUCH better than in the first game and you actually can use the manga-faithful outfits in cutscenes unlike in Ken's Rage 1 where you couldn't use them for anything but gameplay.

Raoh didn't want to fight Souther since he wanted to dominate him in front of everyone, but that wasn't possible without knowing the secret of his body. He could still beat Souther through sheer brute force regardless of his apparent immunity to Hokuto Shinken. He just didn't want want to do that since he'd be guaranteed to take damage without being able to use Hokuto Shinken.

As for Ken, it's literally explicitly said that Raoh > Ken at the end of the story and the only reason Raoh lost was because he gave all his spiritual energy to Yuria to extend her lifespan.
He was basically fighting Kenshiro on fumes and STILL gave Ken a hard fight.

And most importantly, he wanted to be defeated since he accomplished his goal of conquering the wasteland (Japan) and now he needed someone benevolent to replace him and lead humanity into the new age.
