Metal Slug worked amazingly as an arcade game so the time investment in creating those sprites was worth it.

On home systems, with infinite lives; you're looking at an hour length game at most with a stupid high development cost in comparison.

The majority of people don't replay games after their first play through. Even if they did, the style of game Metal Slug is means they can't charge anything higher than maybe $15-20 US which still doesn't justify how much work that would have to go into making all those new art assets.

The only way we are seeing a new, major Metal Slug release is if they go full HD sprites and backgrounds that are easy to animate and tile so they can create something equivalent to Rayman Origins/Legends so they can charge $50-60 for the same amount of work.

Or better... Just a classic 2D style Metal Slug with 3D models and backgrounds made by Arc System Works with the same tech they used with Guilty Gear Xrd.

SNK probably doesn't have enough funds to make it themselves (and make it look good) anyway so outsourcing seems the best option.
