The seem like they've been strongly improved, I've played zero mission before and plan on playing the new one.

I think it's interesting to play metroid after Zero Mission, to see where it comes from, but it clearly show its age. The metroid series was still in proto state up until Super, where it trully found its groove.

Same apply to metroid 2. Try it out after having played Samus returns. I wouldn't be surprised if metroid 2 was an available bonus game after you beat the game, like it was the case for Zero mission.
