They're still mostly standard parts and they actually reduced the amount of specialised pieces.

The real issues are:
- They overdesign the sets with building techniques that seem to be mostly there to inflate the parts count, giving you a fake feeling of increased value.
- They fill out the inside of the sets with randomly colored parts that don't match anything else in the set.
Some say that it's to make building easier for morons but all it really does is decrease the ability to build something else out of one set. And speaking of morons: that's why there aren't any alternative models on the back of the box anymore on most of the sets since soccer moms complained that there aren't any instructions for them.
