I'm like super fucking horrible at Puyo Puyo, I couldn't get past like level 3 in Mean Bean Machine but that boss is so piss-easy, Robotnik pretty much kills himself & barely ever messes with you on it. You sure as hell don't even need to rely on combos so I don't get the struggle here.

it's about the replayability, the mastering of the game, the comfort it provides when playing... Whenever you're feeling relax'd you can crack open Mania again instead of going for that adventure game that you have to invest an hour or two in to really make any kind of progress in.

In my case it was because I died three times to areas with bugged collision that instant kills you if you land there even though nothing about it should, more than anything else in the zone being particularly difficult.

Collision systems only work well on convex shapes. This applies to every game. Notice how there are virtually no convex areas to walk in. I don't think it's too easy, but it's certainly not as punishing as the classics with their limited continues. I ran out of lives once. Metallic Madness saw me get crushed by moving blocks one too many times. I think I died at the Oil Ocean boss four or five times. It's true that they pussed out on the drowning, though.

Anyway, the fact is that they were probably smart for making it easier. I've heard a number of people complaining that the game's too hard, even. With Sanic already being in a weird spot critically, I think they struck a good balance of making the game beginner friendly without it being a boring cakewalk.

I like Sonic Mania, even though I only died about five times on my first playthrough. Its less about the challenge and more about finding ways to tear through the levels as fast as possible.

It's because Sonic Mania is about on-par with the old Sonic games in difficulty. They aren't exactly HARD games compared to contemporaries at the time, and a lot of the series promotes very aggressive "take hits thanks to rings and slam the bosses" play, but they'll fuck you up if you don't take the time to actually learn from your mistakes.

The Mean Bean boss is pathetically easy, but i've legitimately seen players get screwed by Eggman somehow miraculously pulling off a 4-chain on them. And the post-fight is glitchy too, getting locked in the chamber or even instantly dying as if the game mistook who was supposed to die.

I just finished the zone and honestly it wasn't fun to play compared to the others.

I think problem with difficulty comes from the fact that it was very, very long ago when we got any proper classic game (or 2D for that matter) which was relevant enough to attract lots of people. Mania got alot of attention, so many new players come to play it, and they fail, since Sonic, while not extremely difficult, is certainly not an easy game.
On other end of spectrum we have veterans who remember big ring/starpost locations in each game and have completed all good sonic hacks and many not so. For those players, Mania won't bring any challenge at all, because it wasn't made with vets in mind (from gameplay point of view).
And in-between we have nothing at all, because only players who could get into Sonic AFTER classic games are those who played 3D games, and they are basically as new to classics as those who never touched Sonic at all. You could say there are Advance and Rush series, but they play and handle alot different from classics, and generally they are known only among hardcore fans who probably played and mastered genesis games as well.

tl;dr
Only people playing Sonic Mania are noobs who never played Sonic before and maniacs who can draw a stage layout for any game should you wake them up deep at night.

My first run took 8hrs and was immensely enjoyable, I still have Knuckles to play as which offers totally new routes and bosses, and even then I could play the game a third time as Tails or Sonic and still have entire sections of levels with unique stage elements be brand new to me because the levels are just that big and diverse. The game has plenty of replay value and even if you only play it once or twice it'll still take you more than just a couple of hours.
Piratefags are honestly being total shitters with this game, I'm glad they get to bitch and moan about without even getting to enjoy the game. I think the game gets moderate bumps in difficulty every two or three zones - notably FBZ, SSZ, OOZ, and MMZ - but overall the difficulty curve is pretty forgiving and doesn't really pick up until the last few zones. The fact that the levels have so many rings and shield power-ups probably makes it easier for most, that and a lack of scummy level design tactics from the 90s line getting launched into enemies or spikes. Lives are also abundant, partially due to the large number of rings as stated before.

If you try to attack the octopus while the tentacle blasters are still up, they can hit you easily. Any rings that fall into the oil sink which means if you don't catch any in midair you're one hit away from getting killed.

It's easy if you don't get greedy, but the guy who got 12 game overs was being greedy as fuck. Giga Octus is not a particularly hard boss but he can be VERY punishing to players who are not patient.

Special stages take a few tries at first to get used to the physics when you first encounter them, but once you get used to them they aren't too bad. They challenge you with the speed increase but they're doable and fun so long as you're quick on your toes.

Keep drop dashing to keep up speed. Use a one button press spin dash to knock the little Silver Sonics into Metal Sonic when they're spindashing. It's impossible to die during the top of the tower fight. Just keep hitting the wall getting your rings back while hitting Metal Sonic till he dies.

I can handle level 3 pretty well, and level 4 is where it actually becomes challenging due to the increased speed but I can generally still pull through, but level 5 is where it's basically luck for if I pull through or not. I'm really glad they put in a Puyo Puyo mode. I can only assume CPZ's boss is set to level 1 or maybe 2, but it'd be nice if it got bumped up to at least 3 on repeat playthroughs or had an option to do so.
I'm also glad that the rooster badnick got a cameo in that boss fight, it was a nice addition.

It wasn't hard, but I believe every single death from my first playthrough was the result of being crushed by shit that shouldn't or didn't seem to be able to crush me. For that reason I never had a ton of lives. Also, Oil Ocean act 2 boss with Knuckles and the special stages 4 and 5 and were extremely hard for me. Keep in mind I'm a big Sonicfag and played all the games multiple times.

Special Stage 4 and 5 were incredibly difficult for me as well at first. Then I learned to just always stay on the UFO's path, always cut corners/jump over terrain and never hit bumpers. They've become my favorite special stages now.

It's not even in the classics. I'm pretty sure Mania's collision is even worse than them because if the post you quoted happened in the classics Sonic would either just stop (blocked by a tiny invisible box) or phase through the thing and end up who knows where.

I'm pretty sure Chemical Plant's shifting blocks on Sonic 2 aren't nearly as much as a bitch as they are in Mania.

Mania's collision is for sure way, way less lenient for crush deaths then the original games were. But I guess that's just what the Retro Engine does being a much more tight classic Sonic engine built from the ground up.

33 lives and all emeralds. My highest life count that I can remember was 39 at the end of TMZ (final boss took one life, true final boss took the next five, the most I lost to any boss in the game). Special stage 5 was a brick wall for half of the game, and I made both attempts at stage 7 during TMZ; I probably got the last emerald at the final special ring in the game, the one that you use a gravity ball + electric shield jump to get to. So I was pretty satisfied that I had a good first run.

Got the seventh emerald in the last possible giant ring of TMZ2 and proceeded to the final fight with several lives still intact. But when I had huge difficulties learning the new dos and don'ts for the SS fight, I ended up dying five times to stupid mistakes.

Since then I've beaten it many more times with multiple solo and partner combos, most of which having a couple dozen lives to end with. I never actually got a game over, and I don't think I ever will in the future. It only makes my first victory all the more impactful when everything came down to the wire in the end.

I'm a fan of polyhedra so I prefer the unused. I also like how the Phantom Ruby is what appears to be an icosahedron. I suspect the Emeralds shape were changed due to meddling from Iizuka, or maybe just company policy to keep everything consistent, but you never know.

I got a few game overs in Mania but nothing that couldn't be recovered from. Sonic 1 and 2 are only made difficult by game overs sending you back to the start. Sonic 3 has the save system and Sonic CD is shitty, boring, and way too easy. I'm pretty sure I just held right for that whole game except towards the end.
