DT is not technical wankery,, it's just bad taste. It's what I liked when I was 13 and starting to learn electric instruments. I even went to see them live. It's super cheesy and corny. The fact that all the progressions are really vanilla, the super cheesy melodies, all the unnecessary solos, the fact that the play fucking power chords. It's disgusting, and people that genuinely think it's good need to explore new things.

The first album definitely suffers from that, but it's a good listen when I'm in the mood for it. The California album is a lot more straightforward, with a couple songs that break into schizophrenic genre hopping. Disco Volante goes the furthest with it, but something about it clicks with me.
DV > Mr. Bungle > California
All are great albums though. I gotta catch up on whatever Mike Pattons been working on lately, I stopped following him awhile ago, right around the time he released that album with renditions of old Italian pop songs.

Gameplay wise, maybe something like Shenmue? Can't think of much that gives a nice comfy vibe with a Japanese theme.
Music wise, you should give Phantom Crash a try. It's got a similar vibe to this in a couple tracks (soft and kinda comfy). Although, Phantom Crash's soundtrack is a mix of tons of genres tho.

Randomly listen to something you see posted on /v/ during music discussion like this one, or choose an album and give it a listen while you play or do something boring in a video game. (Like grinding)
Threads like this got me into ELO, Toshiki Kadomatsu and Casiopea and from there Youtube recommendations expanded on that some more.
Just find a genre of music you like and go from there, it'll take some time but you'll get there eventually.

I think my tastes might just be too specific for my own good (not trying to toot my own horn here). Even with Casiopea I only liked 2 Albums; their debut album with was close to perfect, and Make Up City since it had some really good tunes. Everything else felt very uninspired to me.
T-Square for example is "pleasant", but doesn't really resonate with me. Doesn't help that I generally prefer music without lyrics either. I appreciate all recommendations though

>what type of music do you like?
Thats the thing, I don't even know. There's no genre I can pinpoint. Casiopea is good but looking through various jazz fusion artists I didn't find anything. I also like Daft Punk, but the electronic music scenes is full of uninspired stuff that you have to wade through to find something with spark. I used to like Drum and Bass but that passion is completely gone. Pendulum used to be good but its so worn out now its nothing more than "PvP montage music"-core to me
I have however a MASSIVE playlist of videogame music on youtube. Its autiste as fuck but its really the only place I can find good music anymore. I wish I was pretending to be a music snob but I really just can't find anything I can stick with.

Youtube's auto play is usually spot on for what I want to listen. I just put up an album I want at work, listen to it and let the next one play. Most of the time I find new and cool music that way. That's fair. It's hard to find music that will resonate with you. I've been trying to get a taste for a year now and I can only really say that if I made a 3x3 of music I'd only be able to put four albums on there, and only two of them truly resonated with me, especially after listening to around 300 or so different albums.
If you're looking for more instrumental mixes then give Kadomatsu a look see, his is mostly 50/50 but you can usually get some great stuff.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Er21uMA7wdE
Maybe Tokyo Ensemble Lab might have something you're into?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E0lU7d4h06I
Also look at the other stuff T Square has done, that specific example has lyrics but I'm sure around 80% of their other albums are instrumentals.

I'm glad you enjoyed Kadomastu. Sea is a Lady is one of the albums that resonated with me with Sea Line Rie being the song I saw posted on /v/, the other being Time by ELO (I doubt you'd like it much though) which I saw through the Daicon IV video. https://youtu.be/-840keiiFDE?t=157
As for Lady Ocean, that's perfectly fine. Although you should define "80's" since a lot of the stuff I've shown you has been created in the 80's.
>I don't even know how to put it without being too vague. I'd say melodic, energetic and creative.
Personally, I love music that's upbeat, energetic and has a real fast paced beat to it. Although I don't mind the mellow stuff. It's why vidya music sticks with me and I listen to it a lot.
Also kinda unrelated but give the OST to Outrun/2006 a listen if you haven't, it's pretty great.

Funny you say that since I've been suspecting that videogames have conditioned me to like that kind of music. Could also be the other way around though, "chicken or the egg" etc.

Sonic Adventure and the Dreamcast in general was probably the starting point for the music I love today, honestly anything by Sega usually gets me jamming to it. Thanks Sega.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Suxkbl5R5yo
Funnily enough I did check up on some old composers for Sega games back in the 80's/90's (Hiroshi Kawaguchi, Yuzo Koshiro etc.) and they reference bands that I listen to today as their influences so it all makes sense I guess. Also I think Step Daughter by Casiopea was used in Bridge Zone for Sonic on SMS and unsurprisingly Koshiro composed the soundtrack for that.
For vidya music though, I listen to a lot more than I do actual music and can listen to on genre I heard in a video game, but dismiss it in an album. This is especially true for Tony Hawk OST's. I've heard Express Yourself over 100 times but when it came to the actual album I found myself not really enjoying it, but once Express Yourself came out I was enjoying it again. Nostalgia I guess.

It's pretty much is just a coincidence.
Back in the 80's Japanese jazz fusion/funk composers just had a thing for the beach I guess, and I can see why. I could post some random stuff that isn't beach themed, but I always find that for a lot of them their best work is something like that.
