Nah man, I grew attached to John, and felt like I knew him in a weird way. John is just cool as fuck and gets shit done. Plus I hate Jack's voice actor, and I feel like murdering people/being an outlaw as Jack is sort of spitting on John's memory, since he died so his family could escape that life.

Often times when a game has a happy ending, people criticize it for being cliche and bad. But I thought, for this game, it really should have had a happy ending. As it stands, the ending is too depressing and too cynical, and doesn't really meet our moral expectations.

I almost cried tears of joy when John got to reunite with his family. And those last missions where you do simple farm tasks with our family, like riding into town with Abigail and hunting with Jack, are just really beautiful and it's great to see them trying to connect. I don't understand why John had to die. I thought the ending would have been just as profound - if not more so - if John got to retire from the outlaw life and live with his family. That way, he can have his redemption.

I understand a theme of the game is "the wild west is dying", but I don't think John living would diminish that any more. The ending is too needlessly sad. It makes most of the game feel like it was for nothing.

I still think the game is amazing, but I honestly think that kind of super bummer ending is a particularly modern (say, post 80s) thing. If this game were made in the 50s or so, it probably would have just ended with John reuniting with his family. I wish we didn't view happy, fulfilling endings as so corny all the time...

Well at least Jack still has a chance to live in peace since one one actually saw him kill Ross.
Even if you spared Ross' wife and brother, it doesn't mean anything since Jack can wait until they die of natural causes since they won't be able to identify him anymore.

Also, even if it was just an easter egg, GTA V has a book that's titled "Red Dead" by "J Marston", so you can assume he did indeed become a novelist.
