Yes and no, while I think it is wonderful that SEGA is willing to hire fans and make something simple and humble, I think it is also represents that SEGA and Sonic Team are lost as to where to take the series so they are relying on Classic Sonic to keep the series profitable.

There were plans for it for Wii as were a lot of SEGA IPs the developers absolutely adored the quirkiness and ease of development (especially since many of SEGAs in house and closely contracted devs were already very experienced with developing for the GameCube). You can see with Samba de Amigo, NiGHTS, and Alien Syndrome that there was a clear desire to turn the Wii into a Dreamcast 2, but the sales did not do too well for those titles, so SEGA stuck with the trusted franchises that they knew would sell. Space Channel 5 was being considered for the Wii.

Highly unlikely as Sega intends to push more of their games as multiplats, so doing that and then entering the console market later on seems a little asinine. I suppose they could do so anyway, but I don't see it making much sense from a business standpoint, hardware sales would likely be extremely low unless they're saving shit like Persona 6, Sonic Adventure 3 (lol), etc for it later down the line
