There are two types of people; people who see themselves as their avatars, and people who see themselves adventuring WITH their avatars. People in the former category tend to play their own gender and typically humans, and see people in the latter to be weird since "why would you want to pretend that you're a girl/orc/whatever". As a kid I always chose the boy character in pokemon because, duh, I'm a boy.
Then as a teenager I asked myself, why the fuck do I have to choose the boy character? "Because I'm a boy" is a stupid reason. What's stopping me from choosing the girl?

Girls look nice. There's no downside to playing as a girl character. I have no good reason why I must play as a boy character.

Granted, I do play as a male in online games. It matters to perma-virgins, and real girls try to group together with other girls. I have no interest in pretending to be a girl.

I don't know where you live but in my experience the only person who asked this to me was a sheltered little kid by religious parents, my cousin. Don't remember what I replied since you know, I couldn't tell this specific kid males fap to girls.
No adult or even teen ever asked because they are sexually mature enough to understand why a male likes a female on his screen.

One of my friends even regularly wants to play DoA with me and picks girls without issue, and no one has doubts of him being straight.
