Japan kind of liked it in general, at least from what I saw looking on the various non DQ threads on 2ch, the reception seems overall good, but DQ is basically a "commodity" game so to speak.
The most common complaints are that the game is too on rails and the second half loses a lot of steam, the cast in general doesn't seem to be as popular and well received as other games like 5,7 or 8 too.
Then again, this is from non core DQ players but people who play other series in general, if you go into the DQ general threads in there you'll see mostly positive comments, but that's in the nature of every general thread and not really indicative of the overall reception.

Honestly, it really depends on which channels you use, 2ch and Twitter are the biggest, mainstream channel you need to follow if you want to get a quick impression on things, though that really depends on what kind of games you're interested to.
DQ is extremely popular in Japan, so you'll find tons of feedback on both 2ch and Twitter, but there's also other places like Futaba(Which is mostly dead these days though), Pixiv and more.
I'd say the problem in gauging a game's feedback isn't exactly due to the fanbase being big, in that sense it's actually better since all those aforementioned social media will be flooded with comments, the problem is that a lot of japanese people are hardly critical like westerners can be, especially when it comes to old giants like DQ, smaller franchises have similar problem in the sense that while the core audience is small but actually very straightforward, it's also hard to properly understand the game's feedback because not a lot of people post stuff about it, see games like Neo Atlas, Metal Max and so on, I know there's a few people on Twitter and even 2ch that post about them, but I also know that there's a huge part of the userbase that straight up doesn't, mostly because they're older people who don't really care much about posting on the internet.

One other thing is, some people say one thing in public but another thing in person, some people also change their opinion pretty fast, especially twitter users, but don't really tweet their change of mind for a variety of reasons, I know this because I speak with a few japanese friends while playing PSO2 and also looking at their Twitter profile, it's a pretty puzzling forma mentis, but it's understandable considering their form of society.

Not really, it's more about the fact Dragon Quest largely missed out on the nostalgic fanbase in the west due to dodgy releases in the past and poor treatment of worldwide. Small percentage of people in the west go into automatic HYPE mode over it compared to Final Fantasy, for example.

i imported the ps4 version and im in postgame.
about halfway in the main story it makes you retread old areas, so not having enough content is an blatant issue. i blame the 3ds version hurting it's development.
the game is alright but only the last couple of bosses wipe buffs, so old dq fans will steamroll the game.
