Is that from the alpha or is the alpha the same as Marble Nest?
>>
>>389038092
The alpha isn't out yet. They did just present their latest build at Gamescon or whatever is the damn game conference this weekend called - that would be the exact same build OP's footage has been taken from too. The TinyBuild guy promised that should the gamescon reception be positive this weekend, they will make the same build available for the alpha backers very soon.

The pic you are asking about almost definitely isn't from Marble Nest, and the current build presented on Gamescon (and in the future alpha) are different from Marble Nest.

In an unrelated news: OP, I fucking hate you, I'm well too fucking fucking hangover to do Pathologic thread right now.

looks strangely comfy as fuck, usually never imprssed with new titles but this walking simulator seems nice enough.
>>
>>389043025
Yeah, the original had this too. I mean it's brutal and incredibly depressing at the same time, but there is this sense of odd melancholy and almost-a-comfort about it too. It's one of the perfect autumn games.
Be careful about the "walking sim" label though. It's... well on one hand it's INCREDIBLY appropriate, and on the other it's about as wrong as you can get.
>>
>>389043382
well your response raised more questions than it answered, but that's great. I never played the original so ill just keep my eye on this and play it without reading any reviews. The trailer seemed to have plenty of interesting things to witness. I just hope they dont pad the mechanics, animations or models so it stays fresh enough. I think short and sweet is preferable to (too) long and drawn out in this kind of game.

>I think short and sweet is preferable to (too) long and drawn out in this kind of game.
The original definitely gave me a feeling of being too long for its own good, clocked in about 45 hours on one playthrough. Still a very cool and unique game though.
>>
>>389043554
Uh... Pathologic was and will be about 70+ hours long: it's a massive, very lenghty game, though you don't really necessarily have to complete all of it.
It's also a survival sandbox game mechanically, not just a a stroller simulator. The original was pretty fucking hard at times, in fact.
You DO spend a tremendeous amount of time walking. In fact it's what most people remember from the game. Walking. Slowly, Back and forth, back and forth. For majority of those 15 hours or more that you need to complete just one of the three scenarios.
>>
>>389043025
>walking simulator
That's how it starts, as a literal walking simulator. Then slowly you start running away from looters and zombies, and eventually you're gunning innocents to find something to eat.

The gameplay changes and evolves a whole fucking lot throughout the game until you cannot recognize it anymore. Rest assured, it's no walking simulator.

that sounds not so good. Most games nowadays can't handle the pacing. For some reason there was more room for fun interactive environments and creative map building when there wasn't such a heavy focus on huge teams and big graphics.

I really don't like survival open world games because of how saturated the market has become and it's usually kinda pointless, just survive until you don't.
Yet, this game tends to garner a lot of love. Sell me on this. What sets it apart? Is there an actual point or is it just "survive"?

The original game came out in 2005, well before the recent wave of early access survival bullshit. The main difference is that Pathologic has a rich story with shittons of dialogue. The survival aspect is in service of the narrative.
>>
>>389050109
it's open world in the sense that you can go anywhere you want on the map (with a few exceptions) and you can choose not to do quests and things and the game will continue on without you. In every other respect it isn't at all.

There's a very definite plot and it's an incredible one, split into 3 perspectives of 3 characters. Each day things get worse, you get a new set of objectives to carry out which yes, you can fail them or not do them and you won't game over, but named characters will get sick and die, people who could have helped you later on. So yeah you can fuck around in the steppe and pick flowers or sleep for a week straight, but you'll come back to a town that's stacked high with rotting corpses and no way to avoid the worst possible ending. And the survival bit really just means that you have hunger/exhaustion/infection meters and need to eat/sleep/drug yourself to stay alive, as well as health and immunity.

tl;dr it's not open world and it's not really survival in either traditional sense.

It's basically a 3D visual novel with survival mechanics and a timer.
Most of the game is walking around and talking to people.
>>
>>389050109
Its not a plotless open world like Don't Starve, for example. It's not even open world, well technically you can go anywhere, but you have an agenda every new day, and the time won't stand still if you fuck around.
>>
>>389051041
Best of luck. I recommend starting with the Bachelor, he's the better introduction. For the first day only you have to complete the main daily quest, it's the only time you can get a non-death game over if you fail it. For plot reasons.
>>
>>389051041
Good luck, anon. Its recommended to start off as Bachelor unless you plan on getting confused about the lore, although Haruspex is more gameplay-driven
>>
>>389051041
Play the Bachelor on your first go because he's basically the tutorial character. The first day is the tutorial day and it's shit because it's all exposition and nothing really happens. Make sure to buy lots of food on the first day. Nothing you find is worthless-- trade it all.

You forgot to mention that you can quite literally do anything. If you want, you can become a beggar and live your entire life within the game through that route, which is 100% feasible. Think of all the professions that exist in the real world; those are the things you can do in this game. This is the type of game that actually allows you to climb the mountains in the distance.

That track's from Marble Nest, a one-off demo of ideas for the remake they put out while working on the remake, which has now been retitled Pathologic 2. Confusing, I know.
>>
>>389051916
I thought it was footage of Marble Nest, but I never played that so I don't know. Someone on reddit reuploaded it and included that link in the description.

Their translation of the text in the video:
Playing in an infected state gradually increases reverb and chorus effects
While standing still, music fades to silence and only ambient sounds remain
After walking for 5 seconds, a rhythmic "walking theme" starts
Different districts in town feature different musical themes

Cheers. Give The Void a shot also if you're looking for something with the same kind of feel, it's by the same guys. More surreal and a little more unforgiving, but less ugly and better as a game.

Anyone else in the same boat of having played the original for a dozen hours or so, heard about the remake and been holding off on finishing

>>
If it's going to be called Pathologic 2, would it be unreasonable to assume that the changes from the first will be somewhat significant? In terms of story, at least?
>>
>>389052810
We don't know. It will still have the same characters (though they may not all be the same people), places, and main story beats (shit like the plague's origins and the Polyhedron are probably essential) but anything else is fair game for renovation.

It may even be aware that it is a remake via time loops or meta fuckery, I wouldn't put it past IPL.

The dev messages all seem to imply it's a remake from the ground up, however, not just a grafix and model overhaul.

I picked up HD last year after seeing a thread like this. There's a more mystifying factor to the original IMO, I was really drawn to playing it. I had no desire to never play it and simply wait for a modern version.

And from what I've gathered, the "remake" is more of a "reimagining".

Maybe someone slipped the kids something to calm them down and it was too much for them, that exaggerated strength manifested as the mind altering twyrine in their game?

Don't you have to complete both Dankovsky's and Burakh's routes to unlock Clara's? In any case, pick the Haruspex.
>>
>>389057457
YES! Artemy's route will teach you about the weird fucked up traditions of the town, you'll get a romance (possibly) and you learn more about the politics of the factions.

Clara's route will just be a mindfuck and either a slaughter or a desperate battle for survival, depending on how you play her.

It's worth it.
>>
>>389056056
It's kind of magical, isn't it? One guy is still remembered after all these years. And he still comes back as if nothing is changed.

>>
>>389057991
It'd make sense for that layer of the narrative. I'm always curious though as to what the meanings are from the second narrative layer's perspective, if the flowers grew already infected to some degree then it could refer to to constant fear of mortality and how alcohol can dull as well as exacerbate the fears?

The fear of death was always there, just like the giant clot of blood. Sitting and waiting for the right opportunity to come to the surface, i.e. the Polyhedron. But bits of it trickle in one way or another over time, you can't fully ignore the fear forever. I think you're right about how alcohol can both dull and exacerbate that fear though. Excessive drinking is a sure way to kill yourself but drinking makes living (especially as a broke Russian out in the steppes) easier. It's like it puts you in a state closer to death? More attuned to the world of concepts rather than the world of objective laws?

I dunno, I'm only spitballing here. It would be a neat extra twist.

There's a part of me that would really like to have it established what the era or setting the children are playing their game in is. Knowing the social aspects and climate could allow for even more interpretation of why certain things are present or appear the way they are. Then there's the part of me that doesn't want to know too much and just likes to wonder. I guess it could be done with more subtle hints - instead of meeting the authorities in the garden you could meet them in their home or at the wake? What are funerary customs in Russia?

Someone that doesn't want to through the controller through the screen when playing Hatsune Miku.
>>
>>389059498
I can add to that. If you play Pathologic while ill, particularly with a fever it really, really gets under your skin - particularly with the music in infected districts and the sound of pustules oozing and popping.
>>
>>389059482
I think maybe they wanted it free of any of those signifiers so that it could be a timeless/cultureless thing? It can be anyone's experience with death as opposed to a specific couple of russkie kids' experience.

I don't know myself, I don't know much at all about Russia except little bits and impressions I've picked up from fiction. There's an article I read recently about their approach to death that was super informative and interesting, I'll see if I can dig it up again.
>>

>>
>>389059885
That'd be great if you can find it. I think you've got it right as well - not dating it to an era makes more sense for something that will be made available to different nations and times.
>>
>>389059885
It's really not timeless, it's very much like a late 19th - early 20th century Russian setting, evident to anyone that's read even a little literature from that time period.
>>
>>389060030
I have difficulty getting people to believe that Pathologic, Hatsune Miku Diva F and Darwinia are my favourites. Hope you enjoy Pathologic, or at least find it interesting!

>>
>>389060169
>timeless
I don't mean the City and the steppe setting itself, that much is quite obvious. I mean the ending with the Powers That Be in the sandbox. I'm not sure how much of the specifics I remember of the ending so do correct me if I'm wrong, but the kids didn't seem to drop much in the way of hints as to whether they were in the same "world" as the rest of the game. It's easy to assume, sure, but the whole "plague as a metaphor for death/loss and the events of the game as coping solution" thing doesn't seem like it's tied to any particular time and place.

Sorry mate, I can't seem to find it. Search keywords are buried under a mountain of stories about rampant death in Russia and there wasn't anything specific about the article I could use to narrow it down.

The gist of it was the indifference and inevitable-ish attitudes towards death that were shared by a lot of Russians, where even as the country stabilized somewhat it still wasn't followed by population booms or anything. And medical advances and technological overhauls didn't improve lifespan averages by as much as they should have, so the writer posited that there was a sort of weary resignation going on. That people had lost the will to go on.

Argument could be made that we are treated in the way that we let ourselves be treated and define ourselves further by it.

Daniil is supposed to be the most knowledgeable of the three but comes out at the end the most gormless of the three, swept up in events. Artemy is presented as a reluctant participant, a loner but can potentially be the most invested, a lover, a champion etc. and Clara is hailed as a saviour and a pestilence but ends up being more of a mirror to the town and the player.

>Is it a sequel ?
>Did they cancel the remake ?
>This looks good, but do I need to play the first one before ?
On top of that, people unfamiliar with Pathologic already get easily confused by the different versions : Pathologic, Pathologic Classic HD, Pathologic the Marble Nest, and now Pathologic 2...

For that reason, in the thread yesterday, I decided to make a new infographic, to give a detailed explanation about all these different versions, and tell new players why they should or shouldn't play classic HD before the remake.
Here it is, still in progress. Any thoughts or suggestions ?

The text is obviously filler for the moment.
There'll also be text next to the executor, along the lines of
>But aren't there like 5 versions ? Which one is the right ?
>Let's go through these by release date.

I think I'll also replace the classicHD cover with the right half of this one>>389066547.
I'll also add more runes in the top part, I just got lazy halfway through.

If you're talking about Pathologic in general, to fill you with frustration and anxiety, I think. To simulate it, just as a horror game simulates fear.

What do you think about some changes to the inventory - as it was shown in Marble Nest.

Along with the inventory slots that already exist for clothing and a weapon, how about having: Four clothing slots, (head, body, hands, feet) three weapon slots, (knife, revolver - as if in holster, long arm - as if on a sling) one or two ammo pouches (as from the soldiers load bearing harnesses that could be taken from a body or bought and to help better organise inventory) and a water canteen (to be bought and that can be refilled) - any suggestions?
>>
>>389076376
The first night you're there, probably. Don't think so once the plague hits though since Bachelor is dutysexual and is too coked up to the gills on methadone for "night missions".

>>389076607
Needs some kind of food pouch and medic/first aid kit but it's pretty solid. Though I'd like to be able to stuff the food and weapon slots with bandages or ammo or something in case of emergencies, type-specific slots is a little too restrictive.
>>
>>389077172
Would being able to stack more items or get multiple uses (from morphine or antibiotics for example) be a good middle ground?

>>
>>389075181

>>389077450
I would think so, yeah. I just don't want to be in a situation where I need to stock up on ammo to go raid abandoned houses and I can only fit so much ammo into my designated ammo pouches, but then there's like 5 empty slots for things like food and water and medicine that can't be used. It's not a dealbreaker thing, but I could see it being one of those niggly little immersion-chewing questions of "why can't I just ____"

>>389078624

>>
>>389079082

Could use the pockets for a revolver until you find or buy a holster? Essentially a way to get the player to put the effort into upgrading their ability to carry more supplies.

If they're going to continue Artemy's mixing of organs they'll need a second bag to carry organs. No way is there enough space to carry enough organs with the current inventory limits.

Honestly, this simple trick will make your Pathologic life 100% guaranteed easy as pie, so beware of abuse:
Break in houses to steal loot with lockpicks, they're really easy to get and you can find a variety of useful things, only men inside will attack you if they see you steal ((women run)), so you're guaranteed everything in the house. The stock of children living also refreshes if you leave and enter ((This is extremely abuseable!!)).

Come, sit down with me, because it's gonna be a long one. An an angry one too.

The mob is a fucking joke, it's the same organized crime as anywhere else. The South American ones are far more expansive, influential and dangerous for example.

I don't particularly enjoy pointing fingers, but in my life, I have come to realize that one of the key underlying factors of "dying unneeded", which ironically, I was told the same thing by one of the Russians I knew a decade ago, is the attitude of the rest of the world towards them. That means, you, you and you and the rest of you. I loathe to generalize excessively, but let's look at the latest trends, shall we?

When a disaster happens somewhere in a first world country, what do we get? Good wishes, charity, condolences, twitter feelgoodery, avatar changing and all the other shit that makes no difference except for one. Making people feel good about themselves. Russians get no such thing. When something ill happens, they are ridiculed by the rest of the world, when they are down, they get kicked and screamed at, when they try to flee, if someone finds out you're a Russian, good luck getting rid of that accent by the way, you're treated as a curiosity, not a human being, defined by your love of CYKA BLYAT and alcohol consumption, even though there is a great number of countries that consume more alcohol and indulge other harmful vices at a far greater incidence. The article highlighted itself points that out, while missing the rest of course.

They were made into a running joke, a clown and words of their language became the killer. As a result you have a culture of people despised and ridiculed by the rest of the world and already born into a place where every other man around you despises and ridicules you, just because you are there and because they feel no better about it than anyone else does.

>>389095342
I get where you're coming from and agree that Russia got the short end of the PR stick but I don't see a concrete link between ridicule and disdain and unnecessary deaths on a macro level. Are you saying that Russians are so hated that they just stop caring about life on a subconscious level? Like the guy who hooks up a gas stove is so beaten down that he unknowingly does a bad job and ultimately causes a death?
No judgement from me, I'm just trying to understand, but that seems pretty far fetched. Japan hates themselves and while it's affected their birth and suicide rate, they aren't having helicopter accidents, etc. all the time.
>>
>>389097281
Being a third worlder, and working 'In black' I dont know if you guys will understand that term I cant have a credit card, so there is no way I can pay the devs
I wish I had a better job to justify a real credit card
>>
>>389097497
It's probably not the only cause but I'm sure it doesn't help much. One more thing on top of everything else that causes the average person more unhappiness. Which does actually lead to more deaths. It's not that unhappiness causes more accidents, it's that the body doesn't recover as well from things that might not normally kill it. Heart attacks and such that would normally be survivable suddenly aren't when the person has no real will to keep going.

>>389062514 explains the medical aspect better.
>>
>>389097497
When you don't see a point to trying, you won't try. It's really simple. That's exactly what goes on there. To make it worse, the government is not exactly backing the people, with rampant corruption flourishing and any and all social issues remaining unresolved until they become so overwhelming that it is impossible to sweep them under the rug. Comparing Japan and Russia is inappropriate, given that the former never fell victim to communism, or reducing the scope of their issues to "they hate themselves", which they actually don't.
>>
>>389097027
I can't think of much that hasn't already been said.
Hoard food on day one.
Prices won't continually increase. One day they'll be extremely high, the next day, buy so much.
The game may take a while to 'click' with you. I didn't get it until day 5.
Buy maps from young vlad every day (once there are infected areas).
If you're paying as Bachelor, press G to use your plague finder. It has sort of a stamina bar, so use it in short bursts. Lenses in your inventory will upgrade the plague finder, so don't sell or trade them until it's maxed out.

You don't really play pathologic, so much as you experience intense frustration, depression, despair, anxiety, and hopelessness with a huge payoff about 1/3rd of the way in, and then it just keeps flying off the rails all the way to a homerun ending. But that slow burn at first is really slow and you get into these traumatic attitudes when playing it. Like every single action you take has to be correct, or you get in an unwinnable position and have to save back.

I would say, play the bachelor, have that intense experience raw, and see if you can beat the game, period.

If you love the story as much as I did, you will have to go back and play as the other characters, which almost require you to use guides and intense save scumming and extremely random and arbitrary exploration that even the guides don't really help, but the writing is so good you probably will want to.

Pathologic has that intense payoff after the first third of the game, when it gets weird and decides it's not going to be your cliche plague adventure, when you meet the three executioners from the powers that be, but there is an even deeper payoff when you realize that they completely re-write the script as different characters. You feel and act as the NPC version of the PCs act in other playthroughs, which is just brilliant game design.

I work as an assistant for an university
I get payed 'In black', means I recieve no bill nor comprovant of my job/wage
To retire a credit card, here down here In Argentina, as far as I know, you need to be 'In white', means you need to recieve a bill to justify your wage. Banks here won't give cards to anybody without the proper documents and decent wage

Also working working in black is kinda illegal

>Like every single action you take has to be correct, or you get in an unwinnable position and have to save back.
That sounds a tad unfair

Sure, I can savescum and rely on guides, but I prefer to not do so, it ruins the inmersion for me

You only need to do those things to get the "best ending". You don't need to in order to finish the game. The thing is that the game can end in a few ways, one of them a critical game over early on, but you need to be really bad to let it happen.
>>
>>389099787
I think that's an exaggeration, I never felt at risk of ruining a playthrough like that. It is entirely possible and almost certain that you'll make bad decisions but that's part of the "fun".
>>
>>389097842
>>389097859
OK now I understand. I thought from the previous post that you were saying it was only external factors to blame. My step mother grew up in Belarus under the USSR so I have a small insight into how bad things were under hardcore communism. It definitely left a scar. Hopefully when the old guard in congress that hates Russia by default due to the cold war retires, we can get along better. Maybe one day we'll even team up and show Afghanistan what's what's.
In the mean time, hang in there and don't pay too much attention to what CNN is saying. When we get a different president they'll drop the Russia thing immediately. 90% of America is cool with Russia unless you're actively fucking with us.

I do have a question though. Do you think the government corruption in Russia is getting better or worse?
>>
>>389100119
I think the government corruption in Russia is getting different. Putin chose to tighten the bolts on one end, but allowed things to happen on the other. I suppose it still is better than in the 90's, when you could steal millions of taxpayer money and just walk away with it. But there is a certain threshold beyond which it will never really get better.
>>
>>389099787
>>389100084
I also never felt like I at risk of ruining a playthrough, maybe at risk of running out of time for a few sidequests, but there's more than enough time to survive and finish the main storyline each day.

Here anon, enjoy the shitty edit I made

Man I envy people who can roleplay in vidya. It's too easy for me to see the cogs, repetitive textures, npcs, limited dialogue. Games are mostly only immersive to me in specific scenery and music.

Are you saying you're paid, but unofficially?
Because we'd call that "under the table" in the States. Dodge taxes that way, so it's illegal here, too.
Usually "in the black", when referring to money, means it's economically viable, you have more assets than debts, shit like that.

Where are people getting all this concept art and models? The backer portal?
I considered throwing some money in when they announced pledges were about to end, but didn't. Then they made the announcement on Thursday. feelsbadman.jpeg

>>389101667
Oooooh I see, thanks, now I know
So yeah, I dodge taxes; this is why I cant use any credit card until I get an official job

It fucking sucks, knowing I have more than enough money to buy the games I want on Steam, but can't because no real credit card to use.

this thread is surprisingly civil for how international it is. maybe the UN should play and discuss pathologic. aussie here.

So yesterday an anon invited me to the old thread because I was curios about this game. I read the thread and gave it a try. I fell in love with the graphics, music, text, weird voices but, after walking and talking for a while it appears to me that there is nothing more to it. Am I doing something wrong? Can I go to the focus and check the corpse if it's not marked in my map? I talked with the mayor but he said nothing about being able to enter Isidore's house, can I go in without triggering the guards?

Day 1 nothing happens.
Keep going, it picks up.

where's ninas crypt on day 11 as bachelor?
i can't find it at the cemetery and the girl there is'nt talking about it.
>>
>>389103613
At least can you answer me if my actions or inactions are affecting something? It feels like I am just expecting this history.
>>
>>389103931
It's near the Crucible. It's the Kane's private burial area.
>>
>>389104124
Walking and talking is the lion's share of the game. The only things that will affect the story are the quests. You'll get the run-around a lot. In the later part, important characters can get sick and die if you don't help them (these won't be quests, you just need to check up on them).
>>
Honestly as much as /v/ sucks this game's dick, there is something about it kind of special.

I stopped in to a random character's house, on like day 3 or something, and she actually had something to say about what was going on today. A conversation about events and quests that she was in no related or a part of at all.

It was kind of jarring actually. Like the game was a world, and not just a game.

what the fuck i just lost five water bottles to a weird smiling man and he didn't gave me bandages. How does it works?
>>
>>389106910
click the bottles in your inventory 5 times, then click on the bandage in his inventory, THEN accept the trade.
