As your first Souls game, you'll probably get lost in the starting area, so don't be afraid to google a progression path if you do. Also, running like a bitch to grab items is a valid strategy sometimes too.

With patience and perseverance, it should be a pretty good game. Some boss fights will suck depending on your build though.

DaS2 makes it worse since the terrible hitbox/hurtbox problem follows your character as well (your position is moved only after the end of the roll, which explains why so many times you are grabbed and 'teleported' in position). I don't know how it worked in the other titles, but they sure must have fucked something along the way because I don't remember ever having such problems in the other ones.

Just beat 2 for the first time last week (dropped originally at Iron Keep from disappointment), beat 3 for the second and third time last month, in the midst of replaying 1 now. 2 is an absolute joke, not a single challenge in the entire game outside of a couple areas that just have awful enemy placement. floaty and unsatisfying combat: fake omni-directional rolling, lack of feedback when you hit or get hit by an enemy, crappy animations...etc, the combat doesn't really have a good hefty feel to it, it's like you're fighting under water.
generic and unoriginal bosses: some of them could be beaten simply by circle strafing, but then again DkS3 has the likes of Yhorm, Wolnir, Deacons among other trash-tier bosses. basically a lot of the bosses and other elements in the game aren't as imaginative (weird, bizarre, fucked up) as the ones in games directed by Miyazaki, they're a bit more generic (BY SOULS STANDARDS).
Agility: this is one of the main reasons why combat felt shitty, you'd time your roll correctly but then notice your health mysteriously turned yellow and went down.

If you're a creative individual it might be your favourite game in the series. There's so much to do, so many secrets to find and an insane amount of builds that are viable for both PVP and PVE.

Still I can see why some people don't like it. Firstly it's quite different to the other Souls games by From Software, they clearly took a lot of risks with the game and considering it's rocky development it's very impressive it turned out so well.

Secondly the games initial release(not SOTFS) felt extremely lacking in nuance compared with the first Dark Souls. Enemy and item placement felt random and lacking in variety, item descriptions were sometimes contradictory to each other and to the first Dark Souls too. The initial release also had lots of bugs, bad textures and the lighting was butchered. Still most of these problems have since been fixed and the SOTFS edition is a fine game worthy of your time.

As someone who sucks at vidyia I liked the difficulty. The only bullshit hitbox I noticed were gutter dogs (not saying there aren't any others) , and I liked how the difficulty didn't change from piss easy if you used a shield to absurdly hard without one. Depends on the weapon. I actually needed to keep repair powder handy for my dagger in DaS2, it would frequently break in the middle of boss battles. Durability is also used as a balancing mechanic for some of the fancier attacks from the novelty weapons. Those attacks tend to eat through a lot of durability.

By weight limit I mean item burden in DeS. Although the equipment burden is pretty stupid and you have no reason to mid or fat roll. 2's addition of tying roll distance to weight is even worse, shame 3 carried that over.

Nah, I'm talking about SoFS. The bug didn't exist in that build. I walked into a boss battle with a weapon at full durability and it would break before the boss was dead. Weapons that either have low skill requirements or novelty attacks tend to also have low durability, you'll often either need a backup weapon or repair powder.

I should point out durability was not an issue right from the start, I just had to keep in mind the weapon was not going to last forever whereas when I did a playthrough with a greatsword weapon durability never even crossed my mind. The DLC areas in particular was where it was a serious concern. For most of the boss battles in the DLC the weapon broke mid battle. To be fair, I guess people aren't expected to play through the game using nothing but daggers.
