For me, it's second best behind Sonic 3 & Knuckles. I think Mania is fantastic and an excellent game, and there is a lot it does better than 3&K. Almost every boss fight of Mania is a whole world of goodness better; bonus rings are better tucked away, so you have the exploration aspect of CD right there when you're ready to search, but not at all in an obnoxious way like CD's level design near forces; and almost every stage gimmick is initiative and fun to utilize, never things you'd rather avoid. But although it does a lot of things better than 3&K, that's not to say 3&K did those things wrong. In fact, 3&K does almost nothing wrong and is consistently excellent, whereas I think Mania drops the ball at the very end for a disappointingly weak finish. Titanic Monarch's second act is a slog to play through, and it lacks the upbeat yet finale sounding music that all the other final zones have. Death Egg, Scrap Brain, Metropolis and Metal Madness all blow it out. And I could forgive a weak final zone if the final boss was still great, but Titanic Monarch's boss is such a letdown. It's even worse to me than CD's, on the ground that at least CD's can be over with quickly. Then there is the super fight, which I think was a cool concept on paper (threeway fight in a trippy dimension), but was handled in such a boring way. Not checking the high speed chase or multiple phase boxes that Doomsday Zone did. With 3&K, my excitement only mounts as I draw nearer to the end of the game; but with Mania, I do not look forward to what happens after Metal Madness. So that's why I prefer 3&K, but I really do think Mania is an excellent game.

There's evidence to suggest they had more planned but they just couldn't do it from not having the time to. There's unused tiles in the final boss room and 4 boss battles randomly stitched into eggman's battle that don't really make sense that they behave as advanced as they do for how small of a window you get to fight them.

The build up you get from Lava Reef > Hidden Palace > Sky Sanctuary al the way up the Death Egg is just too hard to beat. Not only that, but for some reason Mania dropped stage transitions halfway through the game. It's a fantastic game, but i don't think it's as good as 3&K. it's equal at best.

It's pretty cool being able to go into the Dev Menu and play the Demo versions of Green Hill & Studiopolis, too bad Studiopolis is pretty prone to crashing & has no music. Also Green Hill just seems to be the final version of it as opposed to the actual Demo version unless I'm forgetting level design changes.

When I was young, I really liked the Sonic games for what they were: awesome smooth graphics with a colorful and vibrant style, a really cool feeling of speed/momentum, and catchy music.

However as I've come to get older I wonder if that was just rose colored nostalgia mostly based on its style. The gameplay is cool but mostly runs on autopilot with GOTTA GO FAST as the main hook, and feels clunky as you get to areas when you then that momentum is interrupted for mediocre platforming. It doesn't quite have the same depth or nuance as Mario.

Sonic still has a place in my heart but I can't overlook that the gameplay just feels super dated and awkwardly designed now. So I ask, does Sonic Mania do anything to change my mind?

Not him but I consider anything pre Sonic Adventure to be Classic, and the Chaos Emeralds have used these designs before. The Special Stages in Mania themselves being a tribute to R/3D Blast Saturn sort of, helps homes it in.

I agree with you on this. Mania does feel like its playing itself a lot, the levels come and go without really utilizing their new mechanics in any way, and the game really guides you through it. Even if you miss a jump or something its fine, since the branching pathes means you'll still techincally on course to complete the level. However, I have not finished the entire game yet. Im at Lava Reef zone.

You didn't like Metallic Madness? I thought it was fun & had some nice mechanics with how you go into the background. The only things I dislike about it are the Bigbom enemies since they're invincible and when you're trying to go through the level quickly in Time Trial you just gotta damage boost through them, it's obnoxious.

i think it stands at the Top and had consistently better levels and more interesting (I said interesting, not talking about difficulty) bosses than 3K but of course, this is where people say wrong because THEY didn't like this level or that boss. Other points against Mania include

I can recognize my bias here and while I liked the fight's concept and the music, I'm willing to concede that yes, it's not the greatest thing ever.

Again, fair enough but I think the Ruby's reality warping can explain away the details of the transitions but yea, how the cuck did we go from the sewers if hydrocity to flying in the tornado. Which leads to the final bit

This is somewhat debatable considering not everyone played sonic 2 and that it provided a slight change up to rest of the game and the fact that the Heavy Magican makes prominent appearances from the start, was there to unleash the worm robot boss, as the act 2 boss make it a worthwhile zone to play through. And on top of that, Act 1 Knuckles was quite the phenomenal throw in that again; I makes up being sky chase. It leaves you wonder what Knuckles was doing during your sonic/ Tail run if you haven't already played it.

It should also be said that we need to recognize Mania for what it is. It's a throwback and it revels in it with its remixed levels/themes and the insane amout of Easter eggs and so on. To complain about the fact that there ARE remixed zones and not wholly 12 new zones is to miss the point of the title. it honestly does a grand job of taking what's great about the classics, add just the right amount of new things and keeps it simple, keeps Sonic simple to give is this near flawless product. On the more subjective side, I'm sure everyone that's played this game can feel the amount of love and dedication put into every aspect of the game.
