Feels like FFXIV has been really amping up the fan service angle outside the MSQ. Even in the MSQ though there is just random bits of fan service without any attempts to make it fit in. I would make an MMO that isn't content driven. There would be large open areas and NPC quests to do, but for the most part the playerbase invents their own things to do. An MMO should give people the tools to make a game, not hold their hand and force them to do specific things.

FFXIV is a perfect example of what not to do. You can do all the 'content' in less than a month. But then there's nothing else to do but grind the same dungeons a million times or grind tomes for pointless relic weapons. Older MMOs like RO or SWG had people playing literally for years. But with very little actual content. After 20 years, there's so much more an MMO could do now, but MMO developers are limiting themselves to PvE story and dungeons.

If I was making an MMO, I would have a world where each person is a member of a country. The whole world is at war and basically on the borders of every country is being defended by constant fighting. For the people who want endless combat, they can get all they want by defending their borders. Countries can win or lose territory over time through these skirmishes.

Beyond the borders however, you need craftsman to gather materials and make weapons to keep the war going. So there would be healthy amount of stuff for the people who like that kind of gameplay. And it wouldn't be level based crafting/gathering like in FFXIV. Just open ended crafting/gathering like Terraria. The effort comes from seeking out the materials, not grinding to level 60 then buying the material off a marketboard. There would also be a trader class.

Then there would be other classes like spies, who sneak into enemy territory to steal attack plans. Or even pretend to be a member of another country, then kill a high ranking leader or sabotage a battle as it happens.

Then there's explorers/scouts, who's main job is to explore the world for various reasons. Finding resource deposits, seeking out weaknesses in another countries defenses, catch spies trying to sneak into their territory, etc.

The point is to set up a world where there is a lot more to do than just grind through a PvE story and grind dungeons. Where every player does all the same things.

People played RO more because it gave them the illusion of a community. Yeah they had to play longer because of horrendous EXP and drop rates. But still you could get to level 99 in 3-4 months. That doesn't account for why they played the games for years.

Which is why I'm saying crafting in FFXIV is shit. And crafting should instead be about finding materials and learning the recipes to make new stuff with those materials. Instead of splitting the role into separate hand and land classes, they should be one class. The effort comes from gathering the materials, not setting your class to automatically make 255 iron hammers and leaving for an hour.

On the flip side, FFXIV has no exploration. You just sit in town and grind on a crafting table for hours. Or you go out to 'find' mats, which it takes less than a minute to find the tree or rock with the mat, and then you just grind it for hours.

So far I honestly like it better than Mnach and *touches scar*. Void Ark threw you in with OCs that honestly didn't grab me aside from the designs and Alex had Y'shtola and Cid but otherwise felt incredibly disconnected after coming right out of the MSQ because of the tone.

Nero at least provides entertainment by existing and I feel like the tone minus the Chocobo is well grounded. I also like that Midgar has a presence because he is technically just sitting there in our pocket as a minion/mount.

Incentives ruin things even further.

Take pvp for example.

Sure people barely touched it but the people who did cared about it and knew what they were doing.

Then GARO happened and a shitter flood came and went. For better or worse many stayed and were getting better at it. That was starting to die down and get back to normal, but then exp was added. Now almost every match has people hacking, afking, or just being shitters with no agency to win. That alone would've ruined pvp but the fucking changes they made were the dumbest shit to date. DPS can't fucking kill anyone anymore. There's literally no reason not to play anything other than a bard/blm/summoner or a healer. MAYBE a paladin because cover is stupid as fuck. Pretty much everyone who DID like the previous pvp and wanted it improved got a big fat shit on their face.

And if a mode is terrible enough no amount of incentives will save it, just look at the diadem remake.

Fun fact, it's not a population issue, the backend of the queue system is so borked you wouldn't believe it if I told you.

Example, at early hours in the morning when there should be essentially nobody on and playing you can spend several minutes waiting for an instance when you queue for it solo unsynced. Shit just doesn't process. It's the same reason behind why the solo player instances got fucked and people couldn't do MSQ for a week.

Another fun fact, the game practically ddos's itself. If anybody played the beta for 1.0 you might remember the UI. EVERY FUCKING ELEMENT was tied to the server and demanded server responses, causing shit like 5 minute freezes every time you tried to open a menu(and this game is nothing but menus). Much of this system is still remnant in the one we have today. Every time you open a bag it sends a query to the server for every single item in it. This is why inventory expansions are blowing up their server.

I actually have ideas for that, but of course it would take actual testing to see if they would work. But spies play a big role in it. As well as a system of GMs who pose as live players and influence people, sometimes with helpful advice and other times with lies. It is up to the players to trust this information or not. But you could concievably have one country which is losing the war badly. But a 'spy' (human or GM) could bring them some really good information that turns the tide of battle. Information of where one enemy group is setting up for an attack so you can launch a surprise attack or information of a good gathering spot no one is exploiting, etc.

Again, it would take play testing to see if it actually works on a grand scale.

Also, if a country gets all of its territory taken over, they would be absorbed into the country that won. Concievably, you could reach a point where one country takes over the whole world. But is that a bad thing? That would be a monumental achievement for an MMO, giving players the ability to reach such a goal. Then after this is done, the game could either reset back to a baseline or keep going and see if the massive single country can keep itself together. Rebellions from a lack of strong leadership or internal disputes over land/money/resource spots/etc could easily fracture the country over time.

But I will fully admit that the game is way too ambitious to actually be made. At least with the current companies making MMOs.

During boss jumps, invulns, between pulls in dungeons. Don't do it if you have a target. If you're not 70 yet you get Deep Mediation which gives you 50% of opening a Chakra when you Crit and Brotherhood at 70 which builds Chakra automatically when a nearby party member uses a Weaponskill.

Every class is viable. I would recommend leveling a tank/healer first though just because you get faster queues to do story content.

MNK - straightforward melee, most fun in terms of flow
DRG - synergy melee, plays nice with ranged roles and has the most raid buffs among melee
SAM - selfish melee, biggest numbers to jerk with
NIN - utility melee, has the biggest single raid buff, threat utility that's very wanted in general for tanks
BRD - UI watcher: the class, most active and spammy class in the game, most powerful raid buffs
MCH - Burst ranged, very structured rotation that requires looking up beforehand, good raid buff
SMN - Similar to MCH, only takes even longer to reach their burst phases, fairly structured rotation of cooldowns but easy freeform-ish play outside of it
BLM - immobile caster DPS, later on gets a lot of tools for bypassing their casting weakness, high focus on positioning
RDM - consistent caster dps, fairly mobile and is similar to MNK in that it has a good flow and is hard to screw up

PLD - only tank with Block with the shield, most cds and generally hardest to die with even if you dunno whats going on, most raid utility cds
WAR - designated "dps" tank, can be great defensively but trades that off with serious dps loss, has no raid utility cds
DRK - magic defense tank, good mix of PLD esque cds, raid utility is an excellent short cd shield

Nope, not only is BLM not supposed to be shit, it's normal. SAM won't outdps BLM unless it's REALLY better geared. It'll get even worse toward the end of the expansion where BLM gets more and more spell speed
as a BLM/SAM player I don't exactly mind this
