AP was a korean-tier grind and everyone hated it. In 7.3 they have removed much of the tedium from it, but not entirely.

Even with AK40 it wasn't hard to get to your first concordance rank and anything past that is just icing on the cake, concordance will matter now with Netherlight but now we have improved artifact knowledge.

AP grind was bad at launch when it was doing the slow research grind and it felt like it was going to be forever before you saw the "end" of your artifact unless you grind like a madman.

I like GW2 a lot and have dumped many hours into it.
That said, everything interesting about it is dragged down by its monumentally bad combat system. Every encounter is a clusterfuck. There's a ton of ideas that don't mesh or attempt to mesh and have no meaningful impact. Every fight boils down to "spam all your abilities, avoid AoE circles and telegraphed attacks." There is basically no interesting enemy design whatsoever.

However the world design is top notch, the classes are all very interesting and there's a lot to like about the game. It's sad that the game could be great but instead its just pretty decent.

GW2 happened because NCSoft execs came in and started ordering ANet around. You can see it even in EotN, GW1's only non-standalone expansion. They wanted it to be a more contemporary MMO.
The original devs for GW1, seeing their vision compromised, began to leave and NC replaced them with a bunch of underqualified people, most notably a former tech support guy was put into a major design position. And so GW2 was born.

Playing a Shadow Priest when Surrender to Madness was OP was fucking INCREDIBLE

In 7.3 we got really kickass new animations. Our gameplay revolves around staying in Voidform as long as possible, aiming for 50 stacks before dropping out, then getting back in. I went from worst single target DPS in my raid to best, and ranked #18 on Mythic Inquisitors because I learned that I wasn't pressing buttons fast enough. It's fast, frantic, and really fun.

Oh, and Shadow Priests have the absolutely best artifact in the game, Xal'atath, AKA Waifu Knifu.

Shadow priests are alright. They no longer use mana except to cast shield and heal, instead spells build Insanity. Once you get enough Insanity, you unleash it on your enemies by going into Void Form, causing the Insanity to drain quickly, but buffing you in the process. It's then a fight against the meter to keep it going for as long as possible, even more so if you use the incredibly unique and flavorful talent, Surrender to Madness, which adds the risk of death once you run out of Insanity.

Yeah, it's pretty great. Just slap DoTs on everything, and because they live longer in Mythic+ it's not a waste. Then they're all stacked up, Void Bolt adds to the DoT durations, Auspicious Spirits means we get more insanity with more DoTs. Mind Bomb is reliable AoE stuns on a 30sec CD, Mass Dispell is great utility, and so many of our Legendaries are great in Mythic+. Dispersion, Power Word: Shield, Shadow Mend, Vampiric Embrace, healing and shielding from Vampiric Touch mean we're a little bit tougher than we seem. We don't need to change talents, and our single target DPS is pretty damn good.

Oh, and if you really need to get into groups easier, you can offspec as Holy or Disc.
