I also dropped the first pretty early on but I bought it anyways after seeing the GM mode and I just finished the first act which is the early access and it seems pretty standalone, I haven't had any trouble understanding anything. You're Sourcerers instead of Source Hunters so the first act is a lot of fucking up magisters.
I highly recommend the game though, I played 18 hours with a buddy over two days and we had a ton of fun, the changes to the core combat give it a lot more depth than the first game had and there are whole new mechanics like runes and all the skeleton shit that they have barely talked about and aren't in the early access.

I know it sounds memey, but divinity 1 is legit the first game in fucking years I've bought (together with my cousin, coop)
I simply enjoyed this game. Its that simple. I fucking enjoyed the game from start to finish. We literally considered to buy it after the first 30 minutes, because it was actually fucking good for our modern times.
No other game had me captured like that. The last game I had bought was baldurs gate 2 i think.
The rest afterwards was pirated. Even games I somewhat liked I never bought, simply because I didnt buy. Somehow I felt different for divinity.
When I heard about the Divinity 2 I paid for Kickstarter asap.

The first game was pretty good. I enjoyed the first zone too much what with all the ghosts pirates and lighthouse/coves and such. The zones got progressively less interesting and the game dragged on far longer than it needed to to be honest.

With that being said I dislike it as well. The asterisks are completely obsolete and the dialogue options would've been perfectly fine without them. The fact that you (we) connect them with chatrooms and/or *teleports behind you* tier RP is a personal issue.
The shift to third person chat options simply allows more flexibility for those autistic enough to care about roleplaying their dialogues. For instance if an NPC asks for a favour and your only option to accept the quest is "Yes, I will gladly help you!" you might feel like you said something out of character. A line of text implying that you agree to take up the task allows you to make up whatever your character said.

When I was younger, I would often pirate games and not buy them, but it's rare for me to even pirate games now. Steam gives a large window for you to try a game out and refund it if you would like so it's not so much a moral dilemma for me, rather I'd prefer the steam copy as it is the most recently updated and there's no concern over the possibility of viruses.

Honestly, considering the amount of money I've spent on games as an adult, it only benefits the market for children who are unable to work and have parents unwilling to spend money on video games. It's a shame that child labor laws would likely prohibit children from doing micro-jobs such as subtitling youtube videos in exchange for steam game vouchers or something of that sort.

What will be the most fun race to play? I played a bit of Red Prince in beta but undead really interested me, though I don't feel that it's a good first run race.

Judging by the first game it's easy to assume this game is going to be quite long, requires a lot of reading and the battles can potentially take a long time.

One can be forgiven to feel like it's the kind of game they sit down and play for 12 hours without having to answer or depend on anyone. If you got a group of 4 though? You are lucky to get one 12+ hour session in the entire fucking thing let alone do it whenever you feel like it.

Memory slots just means that I have to waste some points on them rather than on cool stuff which is just boring. I played first version of EA and all I remember is that it was equally annoying to "tactics" in Dragon Age Origins where I had to waste points on it if I wanted to set more complicated things to do for AI.

You get more slots for free as you level up, and between the regular skills, racials, item skills and consumables my guys don't feel squeezed for lack of options. You get a lot more stat points than you did in Divos 1 so droping a couple into memory isn't a big deal. Gear can also increase your number of memory slots.
