It's essentially the FATAL of mods.

Half-life 2 did it correctly though. Story exposition is mostly contained in a locked room and is rarely during the actual gameplay where you might see some cinematic set piece and characters will talk for a few seconds. It's nothing like more modern games where characters are interrupting the gameplay every few seconds to tell you things that are immediately obvious.
