Enter the Matrix is extremely janky with terrible controls (strafe with the shoulder buttons? the fuck is this Kings Field) and fuck ugly, but I think it works better as a Matrix game than Path of Neo. Its plot is relatively "grounded" with the same general theme as the first movie, of these like secret rebels moving behind the scenes of the fake everyday world, killing cops and men in black and shit with sick martial arts moves and lots of guns for their own purposes. Everything about the game is geared towards evoking The Matrix, right down to the awesome hacking minigame.

Path of Neo is much less janky, melee combat is extremely satisfying, but the game is as schizophrenic and bizarre as absolutely anything I've ever played. Sometimes this works to its advantage (the opening dream level, the black and white dojo level, the weird level with the parable of Chuang Tzu and the skull) and sometimes...not (everything in the Merovingian's mansion without exception). Like, how can you possibly convince me that this is a Matrix game, when I am kung fu fighting giant anthromorphic ants that can only be killed by fire?? Also the gunplay is by and large really shitty and they rapidly dispense with it, which leaves the game feeling a bit unvaried despite this bizarre carnival atmosphere.

I do wish a less insane company could iterate on its melee combat though. When it stuck to being a beat-em-up it was really quite decent.

I played this and pretty much every single old Lego game that exists. Dear god, I still remember those difficulty spikes, with Pohatu Nuva's and Tahu Nuva's levels being ridiculously tough for 8 year old me while the final boss was pathetically easy.
