AM2R didn't literally take the level design 1:1 (except arguably the opening area that was probably made intentionally as close as possible), they took the general structure of each area and tweaked it to fit the powers from Super Metroid and ZM. As someone who played Metroid 2, then Super/Fusion/ZM, and then AM2R in that order in a month's period of time, I really appreciated all the tweaks to the game. Some areas are barely recognizable, both aesthetically and with regards to room design, unless you look at the general map and see the same overall shape of the area.

In America, you can put patents on really just about anything and sue anyone for anything; doesn't mean they're valid and doesn't mean you'll win any cases.

Nintendo got sued by a patent troll company, a company that makes profit by getting a bunch of vague flimsy patents through loose courts (Mostly Texas) and sues anyone who's successful with anything remotely resembling those vague ideas (Which happens to be many things since they're so broad). They generate nothing and just make money by suing others.

Their patents are all bullshit and don't hold up in court at all, so really they abuse the fact that the process of getting sued is such a bitch for the defender, and hope they'll just settle out of court to make them go away, because if they were taken to court and their lawsuit confronted, they would lose. Big companies usually just settle with them because they don't care, and small companies and individuals don't even have the funds to fight them in court in the first place.

Hire a bunch of decent/educated patent people (be it judge, industry, inventors, advocates etc) then lock them in a fancy hotel for a decade till they unfuck the laws.

These laws are old as SHIT and really obsolete these days.
