Which of these mystery games is your favorite?
Best mysteries?
Best characters?
Wildest ride?
Best music?
Best and hardest puzzles?
>>
>>388925985
Pleb: Ace Attorney/Danganrompa
Patrician: Hotel Dusk/Ghost Trick
Contrarian: Layton/ZE
>>
>>388926104
Layton deserves better than being lumped with ZE.
>>
>>388926104
You didn't mention Umineko. I got you though. It's Patrician.

Layton, although a lot of them are bullshit

You listed Ghost Trick as your favorite but for all the best qualities categories listed other games. What was it about Ghost Trick that made you like it best?
>>
>>388929018
The artstyle, clever gameplay, and an extremely satisfying plot with a great ending. If it were a series on par with Ace Attorney, it'd be the clear-cut winner imo.
>>
>>388925985
Why did the best one, Zero Escape, get such a small spot

Umineko is simultaneously the greatest and also the most retarded piece of literature ever written.

Ghost Trick, Ace Attorney and Hotel Dusk are the only ones worth playing.

Zero escape is the best. ZTD may have sucked compared to the other two but it's still better than danganronpa. Ghost trick is runner up fuck it's so good

I wish they remade Umineko to actually have gameplay. The game is setup for it, Episode 8 is the only ounce of gameplay and it was a fun logic puzzle.

Having come to play it recently, mystery rooms was pretty damn good considering it was basicly just ace attorney investigations but streamlined into 15 minute chapters.
Why did this cutie have to die? I just wanted to make peace with her.
>>
>>388930247
Who are you quoting, we just talkin about ZTD not the entire series
>>
>>388930108
>>388930140
Is it good? Does it have any new or retold story?
>>
>>388930004
Mystery Room was a spinoff. Mystery Journey is a main series entry that treats the 3DS as an afterthought.
>>
>>388930307
New story but it's self contained. Some what-if stories like Black Battler.
>>
>>388925985
I legit couldn't stop playing 999 or Ghost Trick until the very end. Both games were amazing engrossing. Phoenix is probably follow up. The cases can drag a lot though so they can be real hit or miss.

>Layton
I like these games but I have to break regularly because I'm too stupid to figure out the tricks to solve each puzzle so I do overly complex methods that take a lot of time.

>Danganrompa

On my backlog

>Hotel Dusk

On my backlog.

>Umineko
Made it to about chapter 3 before I had to tap out. The genre shift was too much for me. The original first chapter though was incredible ride and easily one of the best VN experiences I've ever sat through.
>>
>>388930285
>ZTD
Yeah, the game that retroactively ruined the other 2 games. Hell, VLR wasn't even that good either, it's full of holes and has an annoying cast.
>>
Weĺl
Ghost trick really good

Dnganronpa is hype and comfy, anyway ronpa is better than layton or aa

Aa is boring ang dialog trigger hunting, and most filler cases are utter shit, aa is so so

Layton well, its the game you play with your girlfriend. Though plot twist usually good, puzzles not really interesting. I'd place it above aa

999 and other games good too. Not without flaws, but 1 was s good as ever17, 2 was good too, but mostly at endings, and 3 was bloody hell, that s not bad

About kyle hide games, it s shit, without plot, gameplay, characters, only with paper design
>>
>>388930382
ZTD didn't though, and I don't remember anything bad about VLR

You're not just being negative for the sake of negativity right anon, that's a bad habit
>>
>>388930362
>Jumped out at Chapter 3
But that's like the best chapter, I too thought it was dumb as fuck too, but the ending was amazing.
>>
>>388930458
Yes it did. It handwaved the majority of VLR's plot and made a good chunk of the returning cast completely stupid. Also alien fax machine.
>>
>>388930152
I got to play it completely blind and was never stumped for more than 5-10min of any murder. And the mastermind got figured out extremely fast cause I played it with a buddy. Idk if I was just used to dumb twists like that or what but we came to the conclusion super early.
>>
what ever happened to taht one game taht was like ace attorney, if aa was about exposing people lying on twitter? I know english trophies came out, but did nothing ever come of it?
>>
>>388930575
That's if you assume everything in ZTD is canon, which with all the plotholes in it, it obviously wasn't

Don't expect another reply if you try to argue with your own logic again
>>
>>388930680
What are you even talking about? Are you saying VLR isn't canon or ZTD? If you want an intelligent conversation then don't give one-sentence answers.
>>
>>388930486
That's what I hear too, but the change away from psychological thriller who-done-it with supernatural themes to DBZ witch battles was too much for me. The first chapter was why I was so into it, but basically none of that remained by the 3rd.
>>
>>388930575
That doesn't mean it just makes VLR somehow bad. The fucking setup VLR does for ZTD is amazing, the fact that the fucker dropped the script and rewrote it to the point where he decided fuck most of what I'm setting up isn't VLRs fault.
>>
>>388930458
VLR had terrible characters
>betray you
>Huh why you mad of course I did anyone not an idiot would
>go back and betray them
>Holy fuck! How could you betray me how horrible are you! I'd never do that!
Shit and annoying characters.
>>
>>388930842
VLR has its own problems, i.e. Radical-6 doing whatever is convenient for the plot, characters not noticing obvious details, scenes being repeated ad nauseum because of the timeline gimmick, etc. I can't be assed to point everything out here. Check tvtropes, they've scoured the game for things like this in great detail.

>>388925985
They're all good at something. Ghost Trick and Umineko have the best story. AA is fun but traditional. ZE is more intellectual, or at least was until alien fax machine. Hotel Dusk is cozy and nostalgic. DR is the most fun. I haven't played enough Layton to really comment on it.

Ever17 and Remember11 are more intellectual than Zero Escape and have better atmosphere too.
>>
>>388930825
But anon, just flip the chessboard around, what you saw wasn't magic, but an illusion
>>
>>388925985
PW and Layton both had an amazing Trilogy but then died after

Zero Escape and DR both had great 1st and 2nd games but then their 3rd games plunged their series to the ground

The Hotel dusk games had good atmosphere and dialogue but the mystery and gameplay are nothing to write home about

Ghost Trick is very odd. It is clearly a fantastic game but also not really. The minimalist cartoon art style is charming and unique but also feels empty and generic. The music is great but sound grating after a while. Story and mysteries are amazing compact but then you have unsatisfying cop outs like the meteor. The cat twist was cool but somehow you being a cat doesn't feel so cool. I believe this twist turned off a lot of people. In the end, these and other bad design choices lead to poor sales and no sequels.

>Umineko
literally not a game, stop including it in these threads you faggot

999 should have remained standalone
>>
>>388930643
Net high, and the localization was basicly canceled by xseed. To much japanese word play and knowledge of japanese shot was apparently to hard to translate without going into japanifornia territory, so they dropped translating to so it wouldnt be butchered
>>
>>388931509
shame, it seemed like it could have been neat, but I can also see where it would have been a localization nightmare
>>
does when they cry have any gameplay? would it be better to just watch the anime?

just looking at the steam pages, i dont think the art really does it for me.

also ghost trick is overall the 'best' game, but thats largely achieved by being somewhat less ambitious. they really trimmed the fat, which i appreciate, but i think some of the other games flaws are by virtue of trying something more difficult.
>>
>>388925985
Umineko EP1 is best crime horror/thriller ever made, in my opinion.

Everything after that is pure trash though.
>>
>>388925985
Haven't played Hotel Dusk but Last Window was some real comfy shit. Been meaning to buy the eshop game that the same makers made.
>>
>>388931798
Haven't played Last Window but Hotel Dusk is definitely some real comfy shit. I think Hotel Dusk came out first.
>>
>>388931330
i dont think the meteor is a cop out.

obviously they eventually have to get to "its magic, i aint gotta explain shit" at some point. after all, its magic. they cant possibly provide a satisfying explanation because its fundamentally inexplicable.

really the only major cop out is that missile's powers "changed over time". everything else seemed to make sense, given that you accept that there is a rock with magic powers.
>>
>>388931627
>does when they cry have any gameplay?
Not really, there is a bit of interactivity in the last episode.
>would it be better to just watch the anime?
Fuck no, the anime is hot garbage.

>just looking at the steam pages, i dont think the art really does it for me.
The art has never been great, especially the original art. The series gained such a relatively huge following because of its unique and fascinating story. If you're not into long reads, it's not for you, even though the payoff is well worth it many times over.
>>
>>388931968
Hotel Dusk was the first one but you didn't really need any knowledge of it going into Last Window.
>>
>>388931330
That twist is part of what makes the game great, so if you spoil it so frivolously, like DRfags and P4fags tend to do, then of course people will shy away from the game.
>>
>>388931605
Shame too. It had a bitching ost.
If i recall this was one of the cornered themes.
https://youtu.be/az3A59aYqu0
>>
ive heard ztd's reputation, but is vlr worthwhile on its own?

i liked 999 quite a bit, but i feel almost all of the games worth hinged on the big reveal, so i can see how sequels would be hard.

i guess the general atmosphere was nice too, something about it actually made me feel pretty uneasy around my 2nd playthrough.
>>
>>388932020
I really liked the PS3 art assets, those are fine
>>388932253
VLR has an equally big reveal. ZTD's was a cop out that no one could have guessed.
>>
>>388932253
>on its own
No. You wouldn't understand the significance of many of the characters and a lot of the endings would be lost on you.
>as a sequel
It's decent, although the plot is a great deal more convoluted, the atmosphere is much more sterile and dull, and imo most of the cast is pretty annoying.
>>
is life is strange any good?

i know episode 1 is free but im afraid it might not even be worth my time
>>
>>388932253
Vlr is still really enjoyable and makes for a decent sequal to try to wrap up the events of 999 as well.
The issue of ztd is that it basicly tries to expland on vlr in the most convoluted way possible.
>>
>>388932439
You're in luck, then, cause there's a patch to put the ps3 art in the game.
https://www.reddit.com/r/visualnovels/comments/53k7i5/umineko_steam_version_ps3_voice_and_graphics_patch/
>>
>>388932228
man that really sucks
>>
>>388932573
It's basically a TellTale game that let's you redo choices.
>>
>>388932503
I just realized you meant playing VLR after 999 and not playing ZTD, not just playing VLR on its own. Yeah that's fine, ZTD is not very good and doesn't carry much over from VLR anyway.
>>
>>388932638
Does Higurashi have something like that too?
>>
>>388932616
999 had a pretty solid conclusion though, with no real loose ends that I can think of.
>>
>>388932745
Haven't played Higurashi, but a quick look at google tells me that there is something in the line of what you're looking for.
