I guess this confirms beyond a doubt that the roster is full of clones. Those who forget history are doomed to repeat it, but at least the base of the game looks like it might be a little better than 6 was. I'm a bit of a latecomer to Musou games, did fans generally dislike 6? I only played it after the fact through Strikeforce and I really hated the simplified combo system and generic movesets, but all the reviews I saw at the time didn't seem to mind.

7 wasn't the game that tried to revamp the series but halfassed it as well as gutting the gameplay and content in a way that ultimately changed nothing for people already averse to the series and instead led to a severe downgrade in almost everything.

Problem with 90% of people who review Dynasty Warriors games is they are not fans of the series. Because of this, they will forever complain how it's the same thing every game.
Fan's understand this and infact like this, but also acknowledge there is improvements and changes with each game.
With 6 however they tried to listen to these fucktard reviewers, mix up alot of the mechanics and essentially pissed off the actual fans due to dumbing down the combat by a lot and making majority of the characters have basic boring weapons like spears, swords and clubs.
The scary part is that 9 is kinda shaping up the same way

DW2 was called "Shin Sangoku Musou" (True Three Kingdoms Unrivalled)
DW3 was called SSM2
etc

Orochi games have a similar problem, because WO2 was just a standalone add-on for the first game, and not a full sequel. What is called WO3 in the West is only Musou Orochi 2 in Japan.

Open world isn't the problem and is actually a great fit for the series, provided they had built off of the existing groundwork left by DW8. State combo even could have been some new ability or combo string on top of the old ones, perhaps replacing weapon switching or the affinity system.

It's possible but I think he's just referring to how 7 had some clone issues of it's own, except that game also had almost the entire roster returning, changed the combat back while still adding many new moves, weapons and features on top of giving the clones more differentiation than 6 ever did, and had a lot of content on top of that. However it actually went too far back and left out the things that 6 did right, but it was still a huge step back in the right direction and a great show of them realising where they went wrong.

One thing 6 did better was making the battlefield feel like an actual battlefield. You could rush the enemy camp straight away (if you were strong enough) on many stages, and allies and enemies pushed each other forward and backwards in tandem with morale. Most stages in 7 and 8 felt like scripted corridor simulators.

The full pairs we've seen have set a precedent, which wouldn't be too much if it wasn't for the fact that the ones we haven't seen are those that have historically been the ones associated with those weapons. Yuanji has only ever had throwing knives, and now all of a sudden Zhang He shows up with them when he's mainly used claws. It would be unlikely and make no sense for them to swap the weapons around.

I'm surprised they haven't just taken Strikeforce's combat style, tweaked it a bit, then threw it into a regular Musou battlefield with hundreds of enemies.

This is what happens when they listen to various Chinese people about them not being realistic enough with their designs. And while armor wise most look fine these weapon choices suck. There are a whole bunch of more realistic 3 kingdoms games. Why would you try to inject that into a fucking Musou game.

This game has gone from hype to "Ill wait to hear what people who bought it say" really fast.

It was actually pretty decent. It's ridiculous that it's taken them this long to introduce lock on into the main series though, and they still didn't add dashing (the non-musou mode type but with it's own additional attacks) but I think they at least brought back a dedicated dodge button. There is so much shit they've left by the wayside from past installments, it's always one step forward one step back with them.

That's one thing we don't know. There hasn't been much gameplay or info of the combat. What there has been shows that the way attacks are done looks quite different, and Musous are a combination of the old repeating attack style with one bar from DW2 to 6 and the new by ending the attack in one they had from DW7/8.
