Have you ever tried playing anything with /v/ which doesn't include a game on steam? There are always a bunch of people saying they'd like to play, but they don't feel like finding and installing everything so then you provide an image with links and a guide and then people take hours to download and install games and mods. If you could make it fit in a <1GB zip, maybe more then 30 people would show up on server to play at any single time.

Exactly. This way, there is no real installation process. The HL1 in the OP is just a .zip. That's how the anon was able to join me so fast. There will be no mod installation, just dragging and dropping a .zip in the Half-Life folder.

Do you happen to still be here? I just tested NGHL with Wizard Wars' most current release from 2009, and it fails to start with it. WW will run with Xash3d, but it has missing particle effects and missing sounds. I'm going to try jumping one version back for WW for each of them, but I was hoping you could have some insight.

Okay so with NGHL, you can join Steam servers. A friend of mine was in some random HLDM server, and I was able to play with him. But when I hosted, his Steam HL1 was not able to join me.
