Zelda 1 came with a map. Zelda 2 has a flawed combat system that works against the enemies you fight and it's world map is worse and more confusing. Tell me level 8 wasn't ridiculous in Zelda 2.

I like what Zelda 2 tried but just from personal experience, I beat Zelda 1 at a fairly young age and Zelda 2 is a huge difficulty spike.

What I dont understand the most is how people gave games like DK64 so much shit when Botw literally made you collect over 900 items and now Mario odyssey is making you do a similar thing. The bias is astounding.

It was part of the design philosophy of the game to have kids talk about the game amongst themselves and share secrets.

DK64 gets shit for its collectibles only being collectable by specific characters thanks to arbitrary color coding more than needing their abilities to reach the collectibles, meaning you need to run around every area like 5 times if you want to 100% the game.

I frequently play Zelda 1 with a randomizer. I think it's great. Vanilla Zelda is nothing too cryptic about the game since there's only a few set of rules overall which everything follows.

Bombs blow up walls, fire burns bushes, pushing blocks opens paths in dungeons. The only odd thing is using the recorder to drain the lake, otherwise the game never asks you to solve any riddles or make any great leaps of logic. You just have to explore and utilize your tools where it makes sense to.
There's further meta-game rules that will help you find specific secrets even when the game is randomized, but I'm not talking about those. In the first quest of Zelda 1, all the necessary overworld secrets are the ones that make themselves obvious.
