I love the art direction of the Dishonored games, but Prey looks really flat and awkward. What happened? Art deco has never been so boring. It doesn't feel in the least bit sci-fi or interesting.
I thought Prey looked flat as well until I realized the game wasn't actually running with all the graphics settings maxed out like I thought it was. Apparently you have to change the graphics settings while in game and then restart the game for them to take effect. Changing them at the main menu does nothing.
Screen space reflections and shadows actually being on the "Very High" setting made a huge difference in the overall look of the game. It's still not the prettiest game but definitely doesn't look bad.

>art direction
You just said it yourself. Viktor Antonov didn't work on Prey.

He didn't work on Dishonored 2 eitther.

Both are graphically stylized with a different art style in mind. Dishonored is more cartoony, exaggerated, gritty, and with a certain sea fog atmosphere to it.
Prey is clean, serrated, ornate to an extent, with a sterilized retro science fiction jab.
Both have graphical competence to them.

that game sucked as well

Prey is supposed to look like '60s space flicks

Was he busy with other projects?

They missed the mark. :/
Just like old times

> why was x good but y wasn't
because lesser skilled people worked on it, or they had less time, or the development of the game went through some difficult iterations.
pretty fuckin obvious kiddo
