Is gigabit internet worth it?
>>
I would assume 50/50 is fine.
That 50 upload speed is actually pretty sweet sounding. Most are like 10 or less.
>>
gigabit isnt exactly worth it but like 200 Mbps is worth it. If your two choices are those, then yea its worth it.
>>
>>388900768
No. That $40 plan will handle youtube at 1080p as well as any online game you play. Torrenting and downloads will be plenty speedy; a movie will take ~40 minutes, a game will be about an hour.

Upload speed is pointless unless you run a youtube channel or stream on twitch. Otherwise no residence needs really any more than 5Mbps upload.
>>
>>388901174
What if i'm putting HD movies on dropbox?
Is 50 mbps upload good enough?
>>
Depends on what you're paying. For $70, sure.

I get municipal 1000/1000 in my city for $40, it's incredible. Comcast is throwing a legislative tantrum.
>>
>>388900839
6.5 MBps, divided by 4 for RTT if using wifi, AT BEST speed. That's trash, shit deal, those are both fairly bad deals, are you stuck choosing between those two? I'd take the more expensive one desu if you stream a lot or play games.
>>
What is a better option?

>Option 1:
200 mbps download
35 mbps upload
$50

>Option 2:
50 mbps download
50 mbps upload
$40

I need to be able to stream netflix in 1080p, game with a solid connection, and upload movies to cloud for sharing.
>>
>>388901284
Well it's 50 down 50 up, so it'll take just as long to upload as it did to download.
>>
>>388900768
>tfw 50$ CAD/month for shitty ass 1.3MBps connection
fucking Canada literally has the worst, most overpriced internet in the world (minus Australia(
>>
Yes and no. Gigabit is good if you're downloading a lot of stuff but you gotta remember that some websites throttle or limit your download speeds.

So that obscure JAV clip might download at 20KBps for a 40MB file. If you were downloading that from file sharing of course it would be faster.

Also if you're going to be uploading heavy data then the 50/50 cap is enough, even though 800MBps upload speed sounds nice, you should just save your money.

>>

Both are the same for what you want to do, but I'd pay the extra $10 for 150 more Mbps.
>>
>>388901520
Honestly, probably the 50/50. 50Mbps down is enough to do all of that.

If you live with anyone else who uses the internet, you'll want the 200Mbps option. If you go with the 50/50, if they're on skype or whatever, your netflix will buffer or your ping will spike.
>>
>>388901854
He said he wants to upload movies tho. Big difference between 35 and 50

Gigabit
>Speeds up to 940 Mbps

If you're interested in Gigabit, see if you can ask around if anyone is actually getting that speed in your area, often Gigabit connections are only 200 Mbps, or at least by my shitty provider.

You're retarded, 30 is enough for multiple netflix streams and gaming while on Skype, i did exactly that for two years before upgrading because i wanted better downloads, 50mbps is more than enough for casual, low bandwidth use like video calls and streaming
>>

Plans are not a flat fee across the country. OP probably lives in a cheap apartment and when he typed in his adress the company (Verizon) recognized that and tailored the plan prices to be more affordable based on OP's expected income. A gated community in a suburban area would see these same plans for much more
>>
probs good for (popular) torrents

but i dont even saturate a 100mbps connection from most sources
>>
>>388905493
Internet is cheaper in cities no matter how cheap your apartment is. Its because they don't need to spend as much on cables.

What I wouldn't give for that kind of deal in my area. I live in the southernmost area of Texas, and our options are limited. Basically, either Spectrum (Time Warner) or AT&T U-Verse (and not the fastest version). Since I got divorced and moved in with my mother, the speed has actually dropped, and I've only moved half a mile away! I pay for 20 Mbps, but I only get that speed when the usage in our area is low (after midnight, usually).

Even in my old house (now, my ex wife's house), the best I ever got was 40 Mbps, even though my plan was for 50. I get different excuses every time I call about it.

To my knowledge, there are no other options other than satellite internet and dialup in my area.

Depends on the company.

The highly recommended ISP where I live has 50gig/month data caps for $60 a month. Or for $200/month, I can have a 1 TB datacap. Oh and it doesn't roll over. I hit that cap within a week and that was me trying to be conservative with my data.

I switched to the lesser ISP, pay $80/month and don't have a data cap. It makes me want to start my own ISP. How fucking hard could it be?

That's not republican faults, actually. Blame the democrats for that one. They're the ones that led to government regulation on ISPs, which is being reversed in a month or two. You can't put down more infrastructure if the government makes it tough to do in the first place. Which btw was done so they can not only take control of ISP private property, but their information, too.
>>
>>388912067
Companies don't intentionally try to make their customers hate them. Even in monopolies (it's not a true monopoly btw), companies are still beholden to customers. And they will want more customers to get more money. That's biz 101.
>>

Let's not forget that for Gigabit Internet you also need a Gigabit Router, a gigabit Ethernet port (which most computers now have) but also:

However even THEN your HDD would still be a bottleneck. Gigabit is not worth it for a household of one person.

The reason why competiting isps have trouble putting down cable isn't exactly cause you guys think they're being blocked. It's just very damn expensive to do. ISP competition has a high barrier of entry based on physical requirements alone. That's cable, data centers, and land restrictions as a start, which btw a lot is government restrictions. Then after that, as a ISP, you connect to the global network either at the bottle level or through the top (which no small isp will ever do).

The upside to letting private companies put it down is to keep information controlled by the people and not the government. Of course, Obama tried to pretty much destroy that with the 2015 NN regulation to ISPs. Btw, it didn't do what all of you believe it does. 2015 NN sole purpose was to give the government more control over internet information pure and simple. So no, you're off the mark.

Except for the moment, none of those private companies were isps. They were purely third party service providers who have been cutting said services from websites (google, cloudfare). So that argument doesn't work. No isp tries to block sites. The only sites they try to throttle is actually content providers who use too much bandwidth, especially in high congestion areas such as Youtube and Netflix.

I'm going to have to correct you there. The regulation was an unlawful regulation and violation of private rights because isps were messing with the government's biggest information cow Google. In addition, Netflix is a company that has investors that are swirling about in the same pool as Google who went and cried to Obama to get on the big bad isps for throttling them. So they made the 2015 agreement that was meant not only to give these service providers more power, but it was to give them complete control over the flow of information. It's a long history, but the only people isps ever fucked with were content providers who were using too much bandwidth. It's not any matter of prejudice. It's simple tech problems. Google and co just wanted isps to cater to them instead of the rest of the internet.

tl;dr the real enemy isn't anti NN or the isps. It's those for NN. In fact, none of them are even fighting for NN. Look at each company supporting it and you'll understand why. It's a scam that was put up exclusively to fuck you and I in the ass

Even then it isn't, a modern HDD can do 150 MB/s easy while the 940 Mbps translates to approx 117 MB/s under very theoretical conditions you're unlikely to see even with torrents.

Fun fact: it's 940 Mbps instead of a full thousand due to TCP overhead and all that fun stuff limiting gigabit Ethernet to those speeds, consumer hardware just isn't capable of going faster so might as well put the limit there. You need the wildly expensive 10GbE for anything faster.
>>
>>388913636
>Maybe if the faggot-jew ISP companies hadn't tried to FUCK US even harder & forced the issue
No ISP actually fucked with customers. The Isps only enemies were services that were making it difficult to keep stable internet for different areas of the country. The only exception is when they were throttling voice and competiting services, but they never affected the consumer. You shouldn't ever be angry that companies are fighting other companies.

I was the breadwinner for our relationship, starting from the day we got together up until her mother had brain surgery and couldn't take care of her disabled son anymore. I stepped in to do that, and she hated me for it because she wanted her mother to die so she could stick her brother in a government facility and inherit the house, car, etc. I cared for my ex's mother and brother for 5 years, unpaid for only one of those years. She hated me for that too.

In the end, she tried to kill me, and got me fired from my caregiver position while I was in a coma in the ICU. So I didn't really see any point in trying to hold on to any of my possessions, and just focused on what mattered most to me: my son, my dog, and my computer, in that order.

Anon, no, the ISPs want their specific brands & 'they gave me money' partners catered to. By them.

Protip: when people ask for regulations, they're only asking that the power normally given to people is transferred to a bunch of beaucrats who not only know nothing about said industry but will use it for general profits reasons that wont have anything to do with said industry you're trying to regulate. So you might want to think about that before you go on about muh evil companies when the government would be the worse option.

You've got a monopoly, and NO people aren't going to stop using the internet.
They're going to get to eat shit & like it.

At that point, if they aren't rioting you're being too charitable.
At least, that's the mindset of the WINNERS in the monopoly game.

ISPs have been improving things for years. You only ignore it cause you don't know what they've improved. You also do know not the intracacies of the relationship between the FCC and ISPs that led to the very shaky relationship between the two that had nothing to do with monopolies as much as it was simple power control.

>>
>>388917384
You are an idiot. Gigabit internet going top speed would be around 125 MB/s rates. An HDD @ 7200 RPM goes from 80 - 160Mb/s disk write rates. You may have very real bottlenecks depending on what kinda setup you have. Either way, I feel that an even bigger bottleneck is space here, when you are downloading at 7.5 GB per minute.

Now here's a question for everyone, what the fuck would you even need Gigabit speeds for? No amount of streaming on Twitch, Youtube or Netflix 4K together would topple that. If you are downloading massive torrents, like blu-ray remuxes at 50 GB each, it would still not even take over 10 minutes.

Same for games, does anyone really need that kind of speed on a household? You will (hopefully) play those games or watch those things, so what's the point of getting it in such blazing fast speeds instead of waiting a bit longer? Or downloading overnight?

Any decent HDD 7200RPM is above 125MB/s, and if OP is willing to pay 70$/month (probably like 90$/month with added taxes and fees) I doubt he skimped that much on the HDD, and if he did he could get one that keeps up easily for a little under the monthly fee he pays.

There's too many links because the issue over ISP information tampering has been spread out over five or so years. Google was actually one of the people who started it all by having access to so much information during bush time that they the government wanted to pry that away from them. But nothing came of it because there no legality for it. During the Patriot Act enactment, the government wanted more control over what happens on the internet after 9/11, as they wanted to get more tabs on possible terrorist schemes in the country through networks. Obviously, isps complied at this point, but it was less about selling anything and more about government security.

But Google is a company based on advertisement and got a free ride when Obama came in for them. So tell me what happens when you give the biggest information seller in the country free reign over ISPs? Your brain can figure that out.

Because he can? It's like getting a high-end performance version of a car, you can keep arguing it's not necessary until the cows come home but it's stupid as hell to claim it isn't extremely nice.

Also for what it's worth, you're not going to see 125 MB/s out of a "gigabit" internet, the advertised speed is 940 Mbps because the packet overhead and hardware limitations mean you're not going much faster than that even in extremely ideal conditions. Practical speeds are still lower than that.

The only reason why you even have a datacap is the fact that your market has been already divided so long ago making barriers to entry so high nobody except big IT companies can afford building infrastructure and even that is debatable. Third world countries don't have monopolies that have been there for decades and they didn't have the necessary infrastructure until very recently, which allowed plenty of companies to compete in every city because building towers and cables is easy as fuck when the local government doesn't stop you at every corner with requiring a new permit that you can't get because the whole town has already been divided by corporate lobbyists 2 decades ago and the government doesn't feel like doing anything. Fucking lol, Americans, you don't even understand why you have shit internet.

And title 2 has nothing to do with that and everything to do with the already-established & market-strangling IPSs starting to use that hold to leverage the consumers.

Romania has isps giving 2Gb/s for about 20$. So yea..

New ISPs can't start up because the incumbents literally own access to the lines and infastrcture. A lot of cities have made exclusive deals with ISPs and even in places where they're legally required to provide access for new players to install their hardware they routinely sabotage attempts by using their control over access to slow any process down so long that the startups run out of money over the months or years they drag the process over.

It's certainly not as good as the US, but it's not too bad where I live.

I pay $50 a month for 40mb/s down unlimited. I live in Windsor.

The problem is you have the right idea in the majority of cases, good PR in a competetive market makes money.

But that's the beauty of a monopoly!

Once people no longer have any choice because you killed all the competition and you have a deal with the politicians, PR doesn't fucking matter anymore.
Consumers don't have a choice to not buy the product, you are the only one who sells it, and you have linked your financial interests to the people in charge of regulating you and/or have literally stacked the bench with people who work for you.

You're not playing the capitalism game anymore, it's fucking over, you won.

Google was being blocked though.
They literally got stonewalled in several states.
>>
>>388914729
Yes okay that clearly explains why my ISP told everyone in my area to get fucked and that they 'were working on it' when they obviously had no plans to when they downgraded everyone's internet from 3 megabit to less than 1.

You don't know shit.

Most of what you listed is regulated more by state and local governments than federal.
So Federal Health Insurance isn't comparable.

It's also fuckin shit.
Every single socialized health care system is fucking awful compared to the care you get in capitalistic medicine.

I sure fucking love waiting in Triage for 12 hours!

Not to mention the file size of games + updates aren't getting any smaller. Some games requiring 5-10GB updates before you start playing, having a fast download makes it a matter of playing a game in an hour (or less) versus playing a game the next day.

Do you even know what triage means?

Yes, retard. Not only will bandwidth never be an issue no matter what pretty much, they also claimed that it's going to be fiber optics if it's a gigabit connection. If the 50/50 connection is using copper, then your latency to online games and your stability/jitter will all be worse. Basically, just get the fucking gigabit connection you stupid retard.

Currently getting 2.5 Mbps down, 0.7 up, for like $59 AU a month. Within the next six to nine months I will be on 100 down, ?? up, with future potential (once it starts being offered) of up to a gigabit.

These long, cold months are extremely hard in the "final" stretch. The anticipation is killing me already yet it's still further away than even MH World.

I really dislike the abbreviations. Are those Megabits or Megabytes? How can I be sure whoever wrote it didn't write it wrong? They're so fucking similar.
