Because Catherine had a fucking plan. Girl who wants to mature a relationship, girl who wants to just have fun, go into fucking space. Boom, boom, boom. Three fucking paths for a distinct character. You can then weave the story and character and scenes about how the character deals with these tensions.

Mass Effect has that problem where when people say they want their choice to matter, they mean they want a blank fucking slate and then "you can do anything." Which is a retarded idea. The only game that half way does that right is Alpha Protocol which was also a shitty game in the actual game part. It doesn't help that it also tossed out its actual arc and stuck in some space martyr shit. Not that their original plan was much better anyway.

Choices work better when you constrain your scope and have a few, but strongly crafted, paths you can have the character gravitate towards. Too much shit and you have problems with having entire sections of the game that get logically cut off.

How does a sequel to Catherine even work? Is Vince still the main character? Do one of the choices become Canon? is it Vincent coming back from space/failing to go space in the first place.
