i feel like im the only one who doesnt give a fuck about free mods one way or another. every argument comes down to well if you do it people will want to be paid for their work, its entitlement at its finest.
my issue is how shitty all this fucking stuff is, the fact they dont want to get actual good modders to do things like missions just shitty reskins and cosmetics most of which exist or will be stolen one way or another and that people sadly have to go through this crap to be able to get paid to have their mod made and supported. i would rather Bethesda just employ good modders to fix their games before they release or people actually be willing to pay modders to do what they love. even popular sex mods struggle to make enough money to be more than just a passion project

Most mods suck anyway. There are some useful ones like widescreen/compatibility fixes for older games, interesting gameplay tweaks like Skyrim's camping/weather stuff or a full overhaul like Enderal, but it seems pointless to spend hours meticulously upgrading the quality of individual trees and adding hundreds of hairstyles that look completely out of place.

There's a reason why people threw a shitfit over horse armor, people need to realize that cosmetics should not be acceptable as DLC either. People only defend them today because of F2P games when really those F2P games would've done just fine with a B2P or a subscription model without adopting a cancerous cosmetic DLC model. Remember unlockables, those rewards you get for playing the game, same rewards that gave you an incentive to keep playing the game? You can't even buy cosmetics directly anymore, they lock them behind a loot crate now because big corporations found a way to feed on a consumer's vanity and get away with it. How any form of government hasn't ruled out this business model as gambling is astonishing to me.

The real issue always was that the actual games were totally flawed and broken so people fixed animations, texture issues, lack of content, lackluster UI and all kinds of other shit themselves and then shared it with other likeminded people to get their fixes in return. When games are released as digital turd and one is expected to pay to get it fixed - and we're talking hundreds of dollars worth of fixes at current pricepoint and shoddy quality of the base game - then the game itself is no longer a viable purchase for anyone. This will either kill the series as nobody buys it after the first time of falling for "mods are now for money only" or it creates a wholly new breed of game that you buy in many tiny parts to essentially make your own for as much money as you can spend. The latter I'd find interesting in theory but it's obviously nearly impossible to implement such a concept well, as it requires significant organization on the end of content creators to make large enough custom content modules to create a whole game out of it.
