the dev team deserve something from their hard work. They built this mod from the ground up on the side of their regular jobs for years for free. I mean they could have just sold the mod for 20 dollars not even offer a free version but they gave two options. Offering a paid version for 20 dollars more that has the same features doesn't exactly sell too well thus the reason why the paid version has a little "Extra" .It's pretty much just support them if you wanna and you get some neat extra stuff. It is all about what you want out of the experience.

that is a different team, the one remaking op4 and blue shift are done by trip mine studios. I used to be a level designer for the op4 one actually. It's making okay progress still a ways off though. Yeah I'm not sure if they have a paypal thing or anything like that, I believe they were one of the first teams to work directly with valve for greenlight and all that.

no one gets paid for the project currently. If I recall correctly even the whole team pitched in to have it put on greenlight in the first place. I think if they do decide to sell it on steam im sure the whole team will get a percentage. From what early combat I saw when I was on the team seemed pretty close to op4. Although a coder from BM did code the vortigore I think? So who knows what other gameplay tips they may take from BM.

I mean the idea for portal was taken from a student that they hired out of a local job fair in Bellvue/Seattle. They tend to hire modders into their team due to the already familiarity with their source tools. So its a good career track.The most communication with valve was they invited a bunch of modders to GDC a couple years ago and gave them steamboxes. (Again I left about a year ago so things could have changed since then.)

I say play HL1, Black Mesa is good, but it wont give you the necessary context. What happened with the story is just a clusterfuck.
>HL2 retconns characters from HL1 to give you the illusion of continuity (HL1 was basically open ended, so they could have a free hand while making the sequel)

I always found it amazing that the movement gamemodes were so fun, surfing is so much fun, and the jumping mechanics, i remember spending nights learning long jumps and bhops .

This. I don't give a fuck that they chose Steam as their platform and I don't think they had any choice, I followed Black Mesa Source as it was called then since the very beginning. Black Mesa is a perfect example of what some lonely nerds can do in their spare time of neglect and virginity, it's honestly amazing. I paid for it because it's a great remake and the convenience of getting news and updates without having to look for them.

Also that shotgun is the best thing ever.

Shotgun is fine, but they should have stuck to the original headshot formula instead of making the .357 colt literally useless for body shots. Also they made Vortigaunts way too fucking sturdy and fast.

G-Man was in contact with pretty much every important character and manipulating everything from behind the scenes.

I got it for around $5 on sale and I'm a Half-Life whore. I've used it to get a handful of friends interested in the series since they were faggots who wouldn't play the originals because of the graphics. Thankfully, some play time with Black Mesa convinced most of them to give the originals a shot and the ones that did ended up loving it.
