Because it's one of the most incredible and fresh multiplayer games to come out in years. It offers a very different experience to everything else, and for most people the game is fun enough to overpower the glaring problems like optimization and bugs.

The idea of a massive battle royale type game has literally been done for at least 7 or 8 years now in arma mods, and h1z1 had it's own battle royale mode for 2 years before pubg came out. the guy who madep ubg didn't like the direction h1z1 was heading so he made his own game and shilled it on literally every h1z1 forum, and it blew up. It's a fine game, but don't lie and say it's fresh or innovative or anything, it's a knockoff of a knockoff of a knockoff of an idea from a movie.

when did I say it was bad? I said it was good in my first post, I just don't think it's fair to call it "fresh" and ignore that the genre has existed for years just because it's now popular. It's literally what happened with league of legends. People actively ignore that dota existed before league and think dota 2 is a copy of league. Does that not seem the slightest bit ridiculous to you? Even if you don't care?

The thing is, not everyone knows about mods from a niche game, the genre started to get popular just a few years ago, it's been probably less than 5 years, i'm not sure, it's a fucking fetus of a genre, it's still fresh, the same can be said about mobas, AoS and DotA existed for years as a mod but only got attention in the mainstream and started truly evolving as a genre when the standalone versions started to show up.
