OK... Starting with the GIGN, whose main sidearm of choice is indeed .357 Magnum revolver.
The reasons they chose this over modern automatics?

-No slide moving backwards when shot, hitting the ballistic shield or environment, and thus jamming.
-Greater stopping power than 9mm and faster than .45ACP
-Lower ammo-cap -> operator has to stay calm and aim, which is important in hostage situations.
-You can load tons of different ammo types into the cylinder, and it will fire.
