It's great. Lots of fun spells and abilities with combos you can do like shattering opponents. Good dialogue and choices that allow for pretty different playthroughs. Great companions. There is a lot of solid backstory and while it might be somewhat generic, there is enough substance to make it engaging.

The PC version is obviously the version to play because it has a full on tactical isometric view. Also, play on Nightmare. Mage is most fun class.

You're not wrong. The problem with DA:O's main "plot" was that it was only limited to the beginning and end of the game. The major quest arcs such as Orzammar's succession crisis, the cursed Dalish Clan, Redcliffe, and even to a major extent the Landsmeet all exist in a vacuum and could easily have occured without the Blight.

It doesn't have any truly outstanding qualities.

The setting is generic Forgotten Realms-ish medieval fantasy with ancient evil that has just awakened but (to some extent because it uses established stereotypes) it's compelling enough for you care about understanding the fluff.

Same deal with the characters: they're RPG stereotypes but they DO have a personality (Morrigan is the cynical outsider, Oghren is the drunk dwarf etc: there's some depth there like Leliana's more adventurous past while at the start of the game she appears as a devout religious type), enough for you to care about them

And this trend continues with combat (pausable real-time tactical combat, cheesable with mage stacking but it's generally solid but not outstanding), visuals (it looks all right both technically and aesthetically but doesn't awe you at any point), music, everything.

However, the fact that it's "solid enough" in pretty much every area is a strength in its own right. There are some universally beloved games that have one or more standout qualities while some of the other bits might even be legit bad, but there aren't many games as universally solid as DA:O, and it deserves credit for that, and it has the advantage of being "modern" (native high resolution support, good UI and such like) while maintaining the "classic" design (silent protagonist, tactical combat with isometric camera angle available etc). And to be fair, now that I've been replaying it, while it doesn't have standout design or content, the effort put into it stands out (say, pretty much every NPC in Orzammar treats you differently if have Dwarf Noble origin, that sort of thing).

I think the map transition screen while loading the areas shows the spread of blight. The game also acknowledges the progress of Blight with NPCs talking in Denerim and rumors from tavernkeepers for instance. But yeah, as far as player character and content is concerned, there's nothing.

The main quest in general is weak (although not offensively so or anything, it's serviceable). The self-contained main and side quests can be rather compelling, though.

Sleep, Paralysis, Waking Nightmare and Mass Paralysis can render an entire army helpless in seconds, and you'll still have mana left afterward. Combining Sleep/Horror will also one shot most trash if need be.
If you've got a rogue with Lethality (I think that's the one that auto crits stunned targets), you can wipe the floor with pretty much anything that doesn't have stun resistance, and mop up everything else that hasn't died by then.
Combine with Force Cage and/or Alistair for anything that resists and you can faceroll the game

I actually dislike that hybrid. You either forfeit control of your allies by letting them do their thing, or you have to pause every two seconds to make them do what you want. You end up functionally gravitating toward a worse version of either single-character action or party-based turn-based. You can prevent this by using a logic system like DAO or FF12 has with gambits, but in both of those games you have to waste stat points on having more slots for logic. If the game just started everyone out with full logic slots, it would be okay with me. Otherwise, it just slows things down.

Does mass paralysis have friendly fire? Even fireball offers respectable AoE control with its knockdown (besides killing weak enemies outright) and earthquake covers a huge AoE for 15 seconds or whatever, but they might be difficult to use when monsters get close. If mass paralysis has no friendly fire then I can definitely see how it might be preferable relative to elemental spells.

Dialogue is generally better in them, the animations actually get much better and expressive and they all generally set up scenarios where the combat is a little more interesting, though it doesnt get fixed altogether.

Lots of roleplaying potential, lots of setting stuff to chew on, lots of different choices on what you wanna do. Easy to learn if you're not used to the Balders Gate style of gameplay.

Cons: Only goes downhill from here, the party members can be a bit bland at times, Alistair will later become to DA what Thrall was to Warcraft, the PC version of DA is VERY UNSTABLE (save often)
